April 13 (Reuters) - Palm prices will likely trade between 2,100 ringgit ($573) and 2,300 ringgit until May, leading vegetable oil analyst Dorab Mistry said on Monday, cutting an earlier estimate by as much as 16 percent due to poor demand and slow take-up for biofuels.

Malaysian palm prices 1FCPOc3, which set the tone for global prices, have fallen more than 6 percent this year as record harvests of rival oilseeds and weak crude oil prices dented appetite for palm in both the food and fuel sectors.

Mistry last month said palm was set for a "year of two halves" and predicted prices would rise to 2,500 ringgit by May on lower stocks and output levels, but then drop to about 2,100 ringgit as production picks up from July.

But lagging biodiesel policies from Indonesia, as well as slower purchases from key buyers China and India, had given prices a "deadly cocktail" that crimped gains, Mistry said.

Palm oil is currently trading at just over 2,100 ringgit, having lost nearly 3 percent last week and around 10 percent since early March.

Indonesia's failure to fully implement a 10 percent biodiesel mandate has left investors uncertain about whether the top producer can consume an expected 2.5-3.0 million tonnes of palm-biodiesel by the end of 2015, despite new policies to boost the sector.

"The market is in no mood to take Indonesian promises at face value," Mistry said in the text of a speech deliverd by video at an oilseeds conference in Beijing on Monday.

"Prices may rally whenever Indonesia calls its first biodiesel tender under the new rules. However, my suspicion is that each rally will be vigorously sold," he added.

As inventories and output begin to climb, palm prices may sink to 1,900 ringgit in the second half of 2015, Mistry said, based on the assumption that Brent crude prices LCOc1 are trading between $50 and $70 a barrel.

Indonesia's proposed export levies on its crude and processed palm oil grades may also lead to prices of free-on-board refined, bleached and deodorized palm olein falling to as little as $540 a tonne in September, he said.

Despite big soy harvests from the United States and South America, the world's top soybean importer China has not rushed to soak up the abundant supplies, Mistry said, which will pose headwinds for edible oils.

Mistry, who heads the vegetable oil trading arm at India's Godrej Industries GODI.NS, said soybean prices may fall below $9 a bushel and drop further to $8 on the back of a large U.S. soy crop in 2015.

Mistry cut his forecast for global edible oil demand growth this year to 3.0 million tonnes from 3.5 million tonnes earlier, and said he expects biodiesel demand to shrink by 1 million tonnes.
