It has always been the ultimate dream of mankind to create a robot that is exactly like itself.
In August last year, Musk enthusiastically introduced a humanoid robot "Optimus Prime". There was no hand-made model and no prototype. He held a few pages of PPT, but it was vivid.
Until June 22, Musk mentioned the matter again, saying that "we are expected to produce the first version of the Optimus robot next year". The robot industry supply chain, which was already ready to move, got the best catalyst, and related concept stocks continued to hype, and US stocks also rebounded many times.
In fact, as early as 2018, the development of global humanoid robots reached a bottleneck.
The first reason is lack of fund. In the environment of world economic recession, the already extravagant scientific research funds naturally prefer disciplines that can make breakthroughs in a short time, and it is difficult for humanoid robots with slow progress to be competitive. But now that the hot spot is coming, a lot of hot money is pouring into it, and the problem of lack of money must be alleviated.
Second, it is the most fundamental technical problem. If we compare it with the time line of the development of automobile industrialization, from the advent of the first steam-powered car, to the introduction of the Ford Model T from the assembly line to the market, there is a total of 129 years of history. The current development stage of the industry is probably in the stage before diesel engines replace steam engines.
The humanoid robot is a comprehensive subject product, involved in many fields such as the Internet, electric vehicles, aerospace, robotics, solar energy, underground tunnel ultra-speed transportation, and has a long industrial chain. In addition, the robot needs to be made into a human shape. Since it is theoretically necessary to build a general-purpose robot, the human shape is the most suitable. It does not need to spend a lot of effort to design another environment for the robot, which greatly reduces the cost. For the purpose of serving people, robots need an appearance that is easily accepted by humans, such as in the fields of elderly companionship, child care, and postpartum care.
The pessimistic view is that if there is no revolutionary breakthrough by geniuses like Nicholas Tesla, it is very likely that our generation and the next generation, including Elon Musk himself, will not see the robot in our minds for life.
But optimistically, once the driving and computing problems are solved, the robot industry is very likely to be like the automobile industry, and the development speed will immediately increase dozens of times.
