KUALA LUMPUR (May 23): This year marks a monumental milestone in the history of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations. In a historic visit to the republic in 1974, then prime minister Tun Abdul Razak shook hands with Chinese paramount leader Mao Zedong in Beijing, and subsequently signed a joint communiqué with Chinese premier Zhou Enlai on May 31. Malaysia thus became the first Asean country to establish diplomatic relations with China, paving the way for a new era of cooperation and friendship.

In celebration of this golden anniversary, The Edge Malaysia is proud to announce the publication of a special magazine commemorating 50 years of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations. The magazine delves into the rich history and remarkable achievements of this partnership, from high-level exchanges and business cooperation in various fields to the enhanced friendship between the people of both nations.

Our special issue explores the fruits of this cooperation, highlighting successful ventures in infrastructure, industrial development and emerging industries. China stands as one of Malaysia’s most important trading partners, and the potential for future collaboration is immense. This magazine provides in-depth analysis and insights into the trade dynamics between the two countries, showcasing the opportunities for growth and the promising future ahead.

A check on the official portal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reveals that Malaysia maintains diplomatic relations with countries and international organisations through 111 missions in 85 countries. This network includes 66 embassies, 18 high commissions, two permanent missions to the United Nations, one permanent mission to Asean, a Malaysian Friendship and Trade Centre, as well as 21 consulate general offices and two consulate offices.

In China alone, Malaysia has an embassy in Beijing and six consulate general offices in Guangzhou, Shanghai, Kunming, Nanning, Xi’an and Hong Kong. These extensive diplomatic missions underscore the significance of Malaysia-China relations.

While Malaysia has established and maintained diplomatic ties with most countries globally, the relationship between Malaysia and China is arguably one of the most storied.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to revisit the past, celebrate the present and look forward to the future of Malaysia-China relations. Pick up a copy of this special commemorative issue, included with the latest edition of The Edge Malaysia (Issue 1525, May 27).

Whether you are a history buff, a business professional or someone who values international relations, this magazine is a keepsake that you will want to hold on to. Join us in celebrating 50 years of friendship and cooperation. Get your copy and be part of this historic journey.
