KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 12): Icon Offshore Bhd (KL:ICON) has confirmed that an explosion occurred on one of its platform supply vessels (PSVs) off the coast of Sarawak, resulting in the deaths of two persons and serious injuries to a third.

The incident took place on Aug 2 at 10.30pm at the Sapar Alpha platform near Bintulu, involving the vessel Icon Amara, the group said in a bourse filing on Monday.

Icon said the incident is not expected to have a material impact on its overall operations or financial performance.

“Icon’s Emergency Response Team was immediately mobilised to provide support to the affected crew members and their next-of-kin. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and our deepest sympathies to the injured and families,” Icon said.

The Edge Malaysia, in its Aug 12-18 edition, reported on the incident, noting that Icon did not immediately make any formal announcement on the occurrence to Bursa Malaysia.

In response, Icon said there was a delay in releasing details on the incident as it "worked closely with our client and the relevant authorities to ensure all information was accurate and appropriately handled,".

Icon added that an investigation into the cause of the incident is underway and that it is fully cooperating with the relevant authorities.

"While the investigation is ongoing, we would like to assure all stakeholders that the vessel Icon Amara, along with its crew members, is fully insured. The company anticipates that the vessel will be restored to active duty following the completion of the investigation," it added.

Shares in Icon dropped three sen or 2.91% to RM1 at market close on Monday, bringing the group a market capitalisation of RM622.56 million.
