Intelligent Investor's Notes

Traffic Light Price Monitoring System on Financial Statement Analysis Template (v1.80)

In the previous release (version 1.70), I have built the CL-P_V sheet to monitor the stock price vs the company value. My objective is to buy a company when it is selling cheap by comparing its stock pice with the company value.

In the current release (v1.80), I have built 3 sheets - V-DY, V-EY, and V-EY_JG in order to compare the price based on its historical Dividend Yield, ordinary Earning Yield(E/P) and Joel Greenblatt's Earning Yield (Magic Formula) respectively. The worksheet will be auto pick all the required data after you filled in the purple colour input worksheet as per specified in Financial Statement Analysis Template.

Based on normal distribution, the DY and EY should between the Standard Deviation from the Mean. And, we are using this theory to buy a company when it is selling cheap (price near to the high band); sell a company when we can sell it in a high price (price near to the low band).

I get the idea from Emily's Video and present a traffic light alike dashboard in the worksheet in order for us to monitor the share price vs its value:-

  • Red - Expensive
  • Yellow - Moderate
  • Green - Cheap

Hi Intelligent Investor, in cell E112 in the "Finance" worksheet, I think you might have mistakenly deducted the Cash from the Non-Current Assets(E63) instead of the Current Assets(E40)? If not, then I apologise for my bad eye haha.

Intelligent Investor

HI chongkeatL1,

Thanks for pointed out. I believe you mean the E122 - Excess Cash.

chongkeatL1

Hi Intelligent Investor, yup, I meant the calculations for Excess Cash. So that means Current Assets should be used for the deduction instead of Non-Current Assets?

Dear Intelligent Investor

Thank you for your effort. I believe this will benefits all of us.

One question, could this Excel automatically download the data or I need to key in manually from klse.my website?

Kinda complicated for Excel idiot like me.

Just wondering.
Do you happen to know Jae Jun too? His Excel only works for US stocks.
I persuaded him to incorporate his Excel for Bursa stocks but he is not interested.

Hi aikwais,

Thanks you for your compliment. As mentioned in my previous post, most of the item in the template was based on Mr. Chong's course. You may want to consider to enroll to his online course if you are new on this field.

You have to key in the the data to the excel, you may refer to:-
http://intelligentinvestor8.blogspot.com/2014/06/financial-statement-analysts-template.html
and
http://intelligentinvestor8.blogspot.com/2014/06/analysis-template-v102-and-answer-to.html

And, I am using www.klse.my to retrieve the annual report. Do let me know if there is better source that can provide the financial data, I may able to built tools to perform auto analysis if such source is provided.

But, I would like to emphasis that we should read on the annual report to perform a more thorough analysis as the financial statement is only provide part of the information. Do read on the financial notes too (http://intelligentinvestor8.blogspot.com/2014/07/data-in-financial-notes.html)

Hi Chief,

It is better I put the answer here and other members can aware on this too.

"You can key in 'incomelete data' to the template. But, it will show you a blank result if certain required data not provided. Do give a try. I do advise you to capture the data from annual report, and read the annual report first before you put your hard earn money to the market."

lindahui

hi II, may i know what the MOS stand for? because i saw this in excel spreadsheet quite frequent.

2014-07-17 21:02

Intelligent Investor

Hi lindahui,

MOS stand for Margin of Safety.

What is Margin of Safety?

"A margin of safety is achieved when securities are purchased at prices sufficiently below underlying value to allow for human error, bad luck, or extreme volatility in a complex, unpredictable and rapidly changing world." - Seth Klarman

"The margin of safety is always dependent on the price paid. It will be large at one price, small at some higher price, nonexistent at some still higher price." - Benjamin Graham

2014-07-17 22:11

Intelligent Investor

In my opinion, MOS is the core principle for value investing. And, Graham told us "Confronted with a challenge to distil the secret of sound investment into three words, we venture the motto, Margin of Safety."
