Currently Malaysia has a total of 498,000 Covid 19 cases and 2,149 deaths. Unfortunately, these 2 figures are surging.

The best way to prevent Covid 19 is to stay at home. If you must go out, you must wear a face mask and practice social distancing. As soon as you return home, you must wash your hands with soap and water. By the way, on 20 April I had my first dose of Pfizer vaccine and on 19 May I had my second dose.

Full lockdown in Ipoh from May 22 as Covid-19 cases continue to soar in Malaysia.

A full lockdown is imposed on Malaysia's fourth-largest city, Ipoh, for two weeks from Saturday (May 22) as the federal government considers extending the tough measure throughout the country.

The announcement by Senior Minister for Security Ismail Sabri Yaakob on Thursday came as the Covid-19 situation continued to worsen, with a record 6,806 new infections and 59 deaths reported nationally.

Mr Ismail said that four districts in the state of Perak - Hulu Perak, Kinta, Muallim as well as Larut Matang and Selama - would come under the enhanced movement control order until June 4.

The Health Ministry has recorded a 119.3 per cent increase in cases in the four districts from May 5 to May 18.

The National Security Council (NSC), chaired by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, is due to meet on Friday and discuss whether to impose a full lockdown throughout the country - akin to the one imposed between March and May last year.

The country's de-facto law minister Takiyuddin Hassan said on Thursday that a full lockdown - in which almost all businesses will be shuttered except for essential sectors - is one of the options that the NSC will consider.

KUALA LUMPUR (May 21): Malaysia's number of daily newly confirmed Covid-19 cases dropped to 6,493 today from a record high of 6,806 yesterday, according to Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

This is the third consecutive day new cases stay above the 6,000 mark. Fifty more deaths were reported today — 22 in Selangor, eight in Sarawak, five in Johor, four in Kedah, three in Kuala Lumpur, two in Negeri Sembilan, two in Perak, two in Melaka and one each in Penang and Kelantan — pushing the total fatalities due to the pandemic to 2,149 compared with only 474 as at Jan 1.

Active cases which carry high transmission risks jumped to 52,106 — the highest daily figure recorded since the pandemic started last year — leaving 643 Covid-19 patients in intensive care units while 363 of them need respiratory assistance.

Today, Selangor reported 2,163 newly confirmed Covid-19 cases, bringing the state's tally to 163,747.

Elsewhere, Kuala Lumpur and Sarawak reported 641 and 612 new cases respectively, according to Dr Noor Hisham's statement.

The ministry detected 18 new Covid-19 clusters today, of which 10 were linked to workplaces, five related to religious activities while three were community clusters. These brought the number of active clusters to 529.

The 10 workplace clusters were Persiaran Perbandaran in Selangor, which saw 25 infections so far; Industri Balakong Tiga in Selangor (19); Jalan Wan Kadir in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor (eight); Jalan Simpang Tiga in Sarawak (14); Jalan Datin Halimah in Johor (10); Jalan Mengkibol in Johor (25); Jalan Selat in Perak (13); Industri Senawang in Negeri Sembilan (24); Sungai Keluang 2 in Penang (24); and Industri Kelemak in Melaka (25).

The five clusters linked to religious activities were Jalan Kota Raja in Selangor (37); Kampung Mujahidin in Selangor (41); Sri Penara in Kuala Lumpur (29); Taman Setiawangsa in Kuala Lumpur (13); and Jalan Surau Stulang in Johor (11).

Meanwhile, the three community clusters were Susur Laut in Perak (42); Jalan Tanjung Minyak in Melaka (24); and Simpang Sahari in Labuan (nine).
