Dr Mahathir plans to develop island in Singapore Strait

KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 — Malaysia’s prime minister said today the government plans to form a small island on an outcrop of rocks near the eastern entrance to the Straits of Singapore.

Ownership of the strategically located islands in the area was previously disputed by Singapore and Malaysia, with an International Court of Justice ruling in 2008 awarding the Middle Rocks to Malaysia and nearby Pedra Branca island to Singapore.

“It is our intention to enlarge Middle Rocks so we can form a small island for us,” Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said at a news conference. — Reuters

I think it is something to do with the territory claim limit as defined by UNCLOS. Territory claim limit will be different between island and rock that only appear in low tide.

The territory claim limit is yet to be negotiated between the two countries .

It s a strategic move lah. The middle rock is so small and anytime can be flooded by the rising ocean level. In order to secure our rights for the EEZ surrounding the middle rock, we have to build something to sustain the EEZ rights. Japan and China have been doing this too to secure their EEZ. If we lose the middle rock, we would lose the whole exclusive economic zone surrounding that middle rock. In term of potential oil and gas, fishery and other resources, it s a long term and strategic move.
