PETALING JAYA: Gerakan has urged all parties to stop using coercive tactics to pressure Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to call for snap polls, adding that it was inappropriate as the country was still battling the Covid-19 pandemic.
Its president Datuk Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai suggested for the general election to only be held after at least 50% of the population have been given the Covid-19 vaccine.
He added that all political parties whether they were ruling parties or those in the Opposition should prioritise efforts to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and to restore the country's economy.
"Political parties should strive to help the people especially the B40 group and the people who have lost their jobs, to obtain new jobs quickly, not to be stubborn to just seize power.
"As I have always stressed that Gerakan's stance is for the people and for the interest of the people to be given priority.
"All political parties must set aside their own interest and work together to help the people and to restore the country's economy," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Jan 5).
Lau also said that Gerakan will fully support Muhyiddin's leadership.
