I want people to talk about stocks, have opinions about listed companies — Bursa CEO

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 6): Despite the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, 2020 turned out to be a record year for Bursa Malaysia Bhd on many levels — in terms of the trading volume, trading value, retail participation and net profit — as ample liquidity and the stay-home phenomenon contributed to the stock market rally.

While the year 2020 saw retail investors returning to the local bourse in a big way, it also means that it will now be more challenging for Bursa as a front-line regulator to effectively regulate the market in terms of market surveillance and investor protection.

From the mushrooming of unlicensed self-proclaimed investment gurus and the democratisation of investing through social media to the penny stock craze and possible misconduct by market participants, the regulators (including the Securities Commission Malaysia or SC) certainly appear to have their hands full ensuring a fair and orderly market.

In an exclusive interview with The Edge, Bursa chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Muhamad Umar Swift acknowledged that while he likes people to have robust discussions about stocks, he was particularly concerned that the “animal spirit of some investors might be misguided” by those who take advantage of social media to promote their own interests.

In fact, Umar has even personally monitored some of the discussions among investors on social media.

But what would Bursa do to crack down on speculative trading and pump-and-dump activities?

Essentially, it is a balancing act for Bursa to maintain a fair and orderly market that does not lose its vibrancy.

Bursa half the time sleeping on the job! They are aware of the pumping and dumping activities by certain groups of people and yet do nothing.
