KOTA KINABALU: The Gabungan Rakyat Sabah state government led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor is tackling the right issues to create transparency and speed up economic recovery, says the Sabah Law Society (SLS).
Its president Roger Chin added that the various measures announced by Hajiji towards cutting red tape and warning Little Napoleons within the civil service would definitely smoothen delivery services to the public.
He said the Chief Minister's moves will help bring in foreign investment needed to revive the economy.
"Removing barriers is certainly a positive step," he said, adding that SLS was encouraged by the measures taken and was ready to play a role in helping the state government make Sabah a healthy investment hub.
Chin said SLS would work with the relevant government departments to review laws affecting investment and come up with a checklist for foreign investors on the legal requirements for transparency, while also promoting investor confidence in Sabah.
"The SLS hopes that this sentiment will pervade all sectors of the civil service in order to hasten economic recovery in Sabah and ease the burden of its people," he said.
In noting that Hajiji's administration has also given Sabah opposition lawmakers a financial allocation to take care of the needs of their constituents during Covid-19, Chin said this gesture showed a spirit of inclusiveness.
"It will go a long way towards uniting the people to work together for the benefit of Sabah as a whole," he added.
The SLS hopes that the Chief Minister will remain open to input and suggestions from the private sector for the benefit of all Sabahans, Chin added.
Other issues on which the state law body hopes to work with the government include providing input in updating laws on land and strata titles, as well as being part of discussions on the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
Looking to the future, Chin said SLS is setting up an international arbitration and mediation centre and hopes to receive the support of the state government.
