KOTA KINABALU: Following the positive growth seen nationwide, the government will expand awareness programmes on the benefits of setting up cooperatives within the community, says Datuk Ewon Benedick.

“We recorded 1,001 new cooperatives last year, and this is the highest the country has seen in years,” said the Entrepreneurship Development and Cooperatives Minister after launching a cooperative programme for the Tamu Darat zone in Kota Belud district, Saturday (Aug 24).

He said being part of a cooperative allows the community to work together and help each other grow in business.

He said it is crucial to strengthen existing cooperatives by expanding businesses and services, reactivating old cooperatives and activating inactive ones.

Benedick said there are many assistance programmes and initiatives to help these businesses, and he hopes cooperatives take advantage of them.

He said cooperatives can boost the economy of local communities if done correctly.
