PUTRAJAYA: The current Umno working council only serve as "caretaker" and cannot make any party decisions, said the Registrar of Societies (RoS).

RoS director-general Jasri Kasim said the "caretaker" period would last until the party polls and the next Umno General Assembly.

He said this means that the Umno working council committee led by party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi could only carry out administrative duties for the party.

"Any policies made by the party must be brought to and debated during the general assembly before any decision is made. 

"The existing council can only carry out administrative duties and can continue with decisions made during its general assembly and meetings before June 30," he told NSTP today.

On the additional information furnished by Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan yesterday, Jasri said there was no timeframe set by ROS to proceed with the next step.

"The timeframe to make any decision on the additional information presented cannot be determined yet," he said.

Previously, Jasri had confirmed that the RoS had received a letter of explanation from Umno on the decision to postpone party polls for 18 months, which RoS had determined to be invalid.

Jasri was also reported saying that the postponement was invalid as the office bearers' term for 2018/2021 had ended on June 30.

He had said that Umno must make an application to postpone the general assembly or party elections by submitting a proposed date to RoS in the near future.
