“An insult to the doctor’s profession”: Netizens aghast at MACC video

THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) continues to court controversy, this time with a public service announcement (PSA) posted on social media.

The 30-second video clip showed an act of bribery occurring at a clinic where a patient tried to pay off a doctor to obtain a medical certificate.

Furious netizens were quick to take to social media to slam the video which many felt were done in poor taste while ridiculing MACC for its misplaced priorities.

Accusing MACC of defaming the country’s doctors as well as the medical industry, user @skumar176 demanded that the anti-corruption agency clean up their house first.

User @HzmShk echoed his sentiments, adding that the medical profession is among the noblest professions.

“Why didn’t you use ministers or businessmen who count their monies every day as an example? Aren’t they the ones who are more exposed to corruption?”

Netizens also told MACC off for attempting to divert attention from more important matters and further accused the enforcement agency of giving Malaysia a bad name.

User @ismfahmi said:

User @AhmadMalaysia88 also suggested that the enforcement agency is itself rife with corruption, and action needs to be taken lest the country will fall into shambles one day.

(Corruption runs rampant from within MACC as well. Why not do an all-out internal operation [to nab the wrongdoers], as corruption is the country’s worst enemy? If the entrusted authority itself is involved in corruption, the country will be destroyed one day)

Meanwhile, user @Guna11065140 questioned MACC’s less-than-satisfying response to the ongoing MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki case.

Azam recently has come under intense scrutiny after allegations surfaced about him having owned shares in two companies back in 2015.

According to Excel Force Bhd’s 2015 annual report, Azam owned 2,156,000 warrants in the company as of March 21, 2016.

At the time, Azam was the head of MACC’s investigation division.

In a press conference yesterday (Jan 5, 2022), Azam said he told the Anti-Corruption Advisory Board that his trading account was used by his brother to acquire the shares in the two companies in 2015.

The shares have since been transferred to his brother, Nasir.

(Why the silence over the accusations against the MACC boss? Don’t bother making a video if it’s going to be about such a small case. You cannot buy a bungalow with RM15. If you want to make a video, make one of high-ranking officers and politicians that receive millions of ringgit.)

Netizens went on to poke fun at the quality of the script, with several users comparing the consultation room in the video to a gangster’s den.

(I didn’t know that consultation rooms can be dark as a gangster’s meeting room. One question: If I request for a one-day medical certificate but the doctor gave me two [days], will this be considered corruption as well?)

User @nusabangsa similarly said:

(As a frequent visitor to health clinics, this is the first time I see a poorly-lit clinic. One man and two women in a dark room – what is the message that the video director was trying to get across?)

User @MrWanJeffrey said:

(“I see you’re not ill but don’t worry, I’ll give you some painkillers in advance.” What sort of stupid dialogue and idea is this, @SPRMMalaysia? Corruption is one thing…stupidity is another thing altogether.) – Jan 6, 2022
