KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 25 — Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) will be providing the market with more competitive and compelling products while supporting the government’s call to reduce internet prices through the Mandatory Standard on Access Pricing (MSAP).

TM managing director and group chief executive officer Amar Huzaimi Md Deris said the offering aims to add more value to users such as adding more content for subscribers.

“Lowering the prices (for our broadband services) is subjective. We look at it as a total portfolio, so we have to reposition our total value offering.

“There will be an impact (on earnings) for us but we will try to manage the impact by offering other complementary services to balance and compliment (the price increase),” he told reporters at TM’s media briefing-second quarter (2Q 2023) financial results announcement here, today.

Earlier this month, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said all broadband internet service providers are instructed to reduce internet prices starting in September.

Amar Huzaimi also said amid rising operating cost, the group is also striving to stay vigilant on cost structure and are constantly investing most of it for the future to enable the nation to progress towards a Digital Malaysia.

“Moving forward, we foresee that there will be headwinds and increased competition. We have to go through it anyway and we have to find ways, better avenues and better opportunities to improve ourselves.

“There is no business without any challenges,” he said.

On the impact of SpaceX’s Starlink satellite services in Malaysia, Amar Huzaimi said this could be a complementary solution for TM, as Starlink could reach out to areas that TM could not reach.

“We are a network provider for Starlink. There are many ways that Starlink can play in this market. In the retail front, we foresee that there could be a possible partnership that we can forge with Starlink to ensure that we are able to offer similar services to the miles that we cannot reach,” he explained.

He added that TM would continue to serve as the nation’s trusted partner to grow Malaysia’s overall connectivity and digital ecosystem, including 5G. — Bernama
