KUALA LUMPUR (March 22): Malaysia has shown a steady increase in its level of happiness from 2020 to 2023 and surpassed the global level this year, indicating significant improvement in overall happiness among Malaysians, according to market research company Ipsos.

Based on its Happiness Index by Countries, Malaysia’s happiness level stands at 77%, higher than the 30-country average of 71%.

Ipsos public affairs research manager Atticus Poon said personal relationships, connection to nature and education attainment are top contributors to life’s happiness for many people.

“Malaysians, in particular, derived more satisfaction from their familial relationships, compared to other countries.

“While people around the world found the economic and socio-political situations in their countries [as] less satisfying, Malaysians [have been] generally more satisfied than the global average,” he said in a report on Friday.

According to the report, 91% of Malaysians are satisfied with their children - higher than the global average of 84%, while 88% are satisfied with their relationship with partners or spouses - higher than the global average of 83%.

In addition, 42% of Malaysians are satisfied with the social and political situation in the country, compared to the global average of 39%; while 50% of Malaysians are satisfied with the economic situation in the country - higher than the global average of 40%.

The Ipsos survey involved 24,269 online adults under the age of 75 across 30 countries.
