KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) says it hopes that the 'Southern Link' project will be receive a greenlight soon and implemented in 2025 as it will complete the Sabah power grid.

SESB chief executive officer Mohd Yaakob Jaafar said the southern power transmission grid project was very important in light of the incident where two transmission line towers in Ranau suffered structural damage.

He said only the 275kV Segaliud transmission line connects the east and west coasts of Sabah.

"The Southern Link project will involve the construction of a 330km transmission line from Sipitang to Tenom and then to Kalabakan and Tawau," he said, adding that if approved next year, the project will be completed in 2030.

"It is very critical because approximately 200MW of the east coast's electricity needs is generated on the west coast," he said in a statement here Monday (March 25).

Meanwhile, he said an emergency diversion tower (ERS) had been installed to address the damage to the two transmission towers in Ranau.

The installation was done in collaboration with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and the Sabah government.
