KOTA KINABALU: Sabah must emulate Sarawak in being proactive in its implementation of the Dual Language Programme (DLP) in its state schools, says Warisan vice-president Datuk Junz Wong.“

Sarawak is making significant steps in enhancing the quality of education by integrating English into critical subject areas.

“However, we in Sabah are still waiting for a clear comprehensive plan from the state government.”

Wong said the implementation of DLP in Sarawak, which began in 2020 for Year One pupils, serves as a good model for Sabah to emulate.

“This will ensure that our students are not left at a disadvantage,” he said yesterday.

He was commenting on the announcement by Sarawak’s Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Seri Roland Sagah, that from 2026, secondary schools in Sarawak will teach Mathematics and Science subjects in English, starting with Form One students.

Wong said that DLP is a crucial element for the future generation’s success and will enhance their competitiveness in a global landscape.

“It’s imperative that we adopt a proactive approach towards this essential educational reform.

“Our children’s ability to thrive in a global economy depends on their proficiency in global languages like English,” he added.

Wong claimed there is a lack of a comprehensive plan for the adoption of DLP in Sabah.

The Sabah government, he added, must be committed to improving the education sector
