THE Sarawak state government plans to import the latest mining technology from Canada to tap into the state’s newly discovered precious metal resources, valued at over RM1.25 tril.

This decision follows a recent survey by Sarawak’s Geological Department, which uncovered additional land areas rich in minerals such as gold, bauxite, and rare earth materials.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Awang Tengah Ali Hasan announced the discovery, noting the significant potential for further finds.

“A survey by state geological experts on 32% of our state land area already found an estimated RM1.25 tril worth of minerals.

“These minerals included gold, rare earth, bauxite and other precious metals and there is enormous potential for more discoveries,” The Vibes quoted him as saying yesterday (June 18).

Notably, substantial gold deposits have been found in the Sri Aman district, expanding beyond the previously known deposits in the Bau district.

Awang Tengah, who recently returned from a trip to Canada to study their mining expertise, expressed plans to implement Canadian technology in Sarawak.

“We in Sarawak will utilise their technology here,” he reportedly said.

Moreover, the Bukit Sari assemblyperson revealed that Sarawak intends to conduct a similar survey on another 30% of the state’s land area.

Given the state’s vast expanse of 12.4 million hectares, he expressed confidence in uncovering even more mineral deposits. – June 19, 2024
