LANGKAWI: The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) today received nine distress calls on uprooted trees around the island because of an early morning storm.

Langkawi District Civil Defence officer Captain (PA) Khairul Afzan Md Yasin said the emergency calls came in between 1.30am and 9am.

"The string of uprooted tree incidents was reported during heavy rain and storms, causing damage to several house roofs and obstructing roads.

"Among the affected areas are Kampung Mata Ayer, Kelubi, Kubang Badak, Belanga Pechah, and Keda Wang Tok Rendong, as well as Jalan Ayer Hangat, Teluk Yu, Bukit Malut, and Chenang Highway," he said when contacted today.

Khairul said APM personnel carried out tree cutting and clearing operations using special equipment.

"There were no reported injuries in the incidents," he added.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued a warning of thunderstorms and heavy rain in five districts in the state until 9am today.

The agency reported that the warning involves the districts of Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, and Padang Terap.
