KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has pledged uphold Islamic ethics in governance, which includes ensuring good ties between Muslims and non-Muslims in the country.

In a speech at the Malaysia Madani International Symposium 2024, Anwar said the Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, Prof Dr Ahmad Muhammad Ahmad At-Tayyeb urged him to work harder to foster better understanding and good relations among the people of the country.

"In fact, he proposed that we take more positive steps to uphold Islamic ethics in engaging with non-Muslim communities in Malaysia and across the Asian region.

"Insha Allah, we will fulfil this mandate to the best of our ability," he said at the symposium themed "Islam and Moderation".

At the event, Sheikh Al-Azhar was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate in Quranic and Sunnah Studies from the Islamic Science University Malaysia (Usim).

The conferment ceremony was officiated by Usim's pro-chancellor, Tunku Besar Seri Menanti Tunku Ali Redhauddin Tuanku Muhriz.

This honour recognises Sheikh Al-Azhar's significant role in pioneering paradigm shifts within his field of expertise, Usuluddin.

Sheikh Al-Azhar, a former president of the Al-Azhar University, has served as the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif since 2010.

He is on a four-day visit at Anwar's invitation.

Sheikh Al-Azhar holds the status of prime minister based on the Egyptian Constitution. His visit marks a historic moment in Malaysia-Egypt bilateral relations.
