KUALA LUMPUR: The National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) has received 37,002 calls from scam victims as of May this year, with a total reported loss of RM203.33 million.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said in total, the number of calls that NSRC had received from the public was 95,094 since its centre was established on Oct 12, 2022.

"The police had opened 10,649 investigation papers for fraud cases under Section 420 of the Penal Code.

"There were also 74 investigation papers for money laundering being opened involving the freezing of 637 accounts amounting to RM72.38 million."

He said this in a Parliamentary written reply, responding to a question from Abdul Latiff Abdul Rahman (Perikatan Nasional-Kuala Krai).

Abdul Latiff had asked how the NSRC was dealing with online fraud crimes while also detecting the modus operandi of scammers.

Meanwhile, Anwar said the NSRC and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, in response to the scams, had also blocked or terminated the phone numbers being used by scammers.

He said in total, 131 phone numbers had been terminated as of May this year, for being involved or used in fraudulent activities, while 112 questionable phone numbers had been blocked.
