SHANGHAI (July 9): An updated set of the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification standards will be implemented in 2025, said MSPO chief executive officer Mohd Shahari Idris.

“We expect the updated standards or Version 2 of MSPO to be fully implemented in 2025. We are engaging with stakeholders and the relevant authorities to take cognisance of what we are doing,” he told The Edge.

MSPO was established in 2014 and made mandatory for plantation companies and mills operating in Malaysia in 2019.

“Three main elements of MSPO certification have been updated under this review, namely under greenhouse gas emissions, high conservation value and social impact assessment to address current issues, such as the SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) requirements,” Mohd Shahari explained.

MSPO has set a target of getting 95% of the oil palm planted area in Malaysia certified by year end.

As of May 31, 86% or 4.84 million hectares of the country’s 5.62 million hectares of oil palm planted area had obtained MSPO certification.

Mohd Shahari was part of Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin’s working visit and agri-commodity promotion delegation to China.
