MELAKA: Melaka State Assembly Speaker Datuk Ibrahim Durum is waiting for an official letter from Rembia assemblyman Datuk Muhammad Jailani Khamis regarding his PAS membership.

He said the reason stated during a press conference at the Parliament building on Tuesday (July 16) was merely a verbal statement from Muhammad Jailani.

"I have not received an official letter yet (regarding Muhammad Jailani joining PAS). That's just what he said... he should write a letter to me," he said when contacted by Bernama here on Tuesday.

PAS secretary-general and Perikatan Nasional deputy secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan earlier confirmed Muhammad Jailani had joined PAS.

He claimed that Muhammad Jailani's action was not considered party hopping as the Melaka State Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2023 related to party hopping was passed on July 31, 2023, after Muhamad Jailani joined PAS.

Asked if the state government would hold a meeting after receiving an official letter from Muhammad Jailani, Ibrahim said: "yes."

Muhammad Jailani's Umno membership was suspended for six years in August last year.

Based on a letter from the Umno disciplinary board dated Aug 28, 2023, Muhammad Jailani was charged with sabotage against the party for deliberately attending the Perikatan candidate announcement ceremony for the Simpang Jeram state by-election in Bakri, Johor. – Bernama
