AS of May 31, a total of 114 housing projects comprising 29,407 units have been declared abandoned, impacting 15,948 private buyers, according to Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming. These projects fall under the Housing Development (Control and Licensing) Act 1966 (Act 118).

Selangor has the highest number of abandoned projects with 42, involving 16,610 constructed units and 8,226 sold units. Kelantan follows with 19 projects (1,149 constructed units and 1,071 sold units) and Terengganu with 15 projects (1,767 constructed units and 1,457 sold units).

In Johor, nine abandoned projects involve 4,638 constructed units and 2,487 sold units, while Pahang has eight projects with 1,161 constructed units and 807 sold units. Perak reports five abandoned projects involving 1,375 constructed units and 557 sold units.

Kuala Lumpur has six abandoned projects with 1,345 constructed units and 832 sold units, Kedah has three with 755 constructed units and 74 sold units, and Negeri Sembilan has three with 389 constructed units and 344 sold units.

Penang also has three abandoned projects with 139 constructed units and 85 sold units, while Melaka reports one abandoned project with 79 constructed units and eight sold units.

Nga explained that the National Housing Department classifies abandoned projects into three categories: projects under planning, revived projects, and static projects. Projects under planning are those scheduled for revival, revived projects have commenced restoration, and static projects are deemed non-viable for revival.

Currently, there are 50 projects in the planning stage, 50 being revived, and 14 classified as static. The restoration process for abandoned projects can take between one to five years, depending on various complexities such as court orders and the developer’s capability.

“The Housing and Local Government Ministry will continue carrying out various initiatives to ensure Malaysians have access to quality and affordable housing,” added Nga. - July 18, 2024
