IPOH: Any party wanting to sponsor or contribute to schools must follow the procedures and guidelines set by the Education Ministry, says Khairudin Abu Hanipah.

The Perak education committee chairman said any corporate agencies, private bodies and non-governmental organisations must go through a process based on the circular issued by the ministry in 2018.

"This is an essential approach because we must remember that schools are places for educating, nurturing and guiding students.

"Therefore, we must provide positive elements to our children to shape them into civilised citizens," he said at the Perak Academic Appreciation Ceremony 2023 at the state secretariat building here on Thursday (July 25).

It was reported that an education charity concert, organised to raise funds for the construction of a hall for a 30-year-old Chinese primary school in Selayang, had received a sponsored contribution from a beer company.

Khairudin said the state Education Department would closely monitor schools to prevent a similar incident occurring in the state.

"For instance, neither the Malaysia Football League nor the Youth and Sports Ministry agrees for sponsorships and contributions to be from any tobacco or alcohol-related companies.

"We must comply with the procedures outlined in the circular issued by Education Ministry, and all parties must adhere to these procedures to avoid confusion and concerns regarding this matter," he said.

The ceremony saw 111 top scorers of the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), Sijil Tinggi Peperiksaan Malaysia (STPM) and the Sijil Tinggi Agama Malaysia (STAM) examinations being feted.

Yayasan Perak also presented about RM1mil worth of scholarships to 418 SPM pupils, 74 STAM pupils and 411 STPM pupils from the B40 group who have obtained excellent results.
