KUANTAN (July 30): Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has expressed concern that a lack of integrity has led to state land being occupied by foreigners.

Using Cameron Highlands as a case in point, Al-Sultan Abdullah noted that land previously leased or rented to local farmers and entrepreneurs is now being rented to foreigners. He attributed this shift to unchecked greed, where the pursuit of financial gain has overshadowed integrity. The sultan criticised those willing to sacrifice their principles, allowing the state’s land to be exploited and damaged, while failing to protect the interests of the rightful owners.

“Moreover, it is deeply regrettable that foreigners have now assumed the role of 'towkay', controlling supply and pricing in the agricultural sector. This has led to the formation of cartels, which undermine the state’s and the nation’s economy,” he said.

“I urge my government to closely monitor these activities, and implement stringent enforcement measures to prevent such occurrences in the future. There will be no compromise on these critical issues,” he added.

The sultan said this in his royal address at the investiture ceremony of state medals and awards, held in conjunction with his 65th birthday, at Balai Mahkota Istana Abdulaziz on Tuesday.

Al-Sultan Abdullah emphasised that those entrusted with responsibilities must uphold their duties with the utmost integrity, and resist any temptation of monetary reward. He stressed the importance of not turning a blind eye when faced with such offers.

His Royal Highness also called on the people of Pahang to report all forms of crime and misconduct to the authorities, highlighting that this effort requires collective responsibility.

He also urged the state government and relevant authorities to conduct a thorough review of development plans for Cameron Highlands, particularly future projects. A comprehensive, firm, and sustainable approach is essential, to protect the highlands from greed and irresponsible actions, he said.

Al-Sultan Abdullah also addressed the importance of river conservation, urging all stakeholders, including the government, industry players, local communities, and individuals, to join forces in preserving the environment, for its sustainability for current and future generations.

Additionally, His Royal Highness stressed that migrant trafficking and smuggling are critical issues, which demand serious attention. He warned that, if not properly addressed, these problems could pose significant threats to security, social harmony, the economy, and other developmental sectors.

“I have been informed of a syndicate using Pahang as a transit point for illegal activities, whether by land or sea. Hence, I urge all enforcement agencies to intensify their efforts and maintain continuous action, to effectively combat this crime,” he said.

Al-Sultan Abdullah also acknowledged the positive economic performance of the state government, noting that it is progressing well. However, he emphasised the need for stringent supervision and meticulous planning of development projects, to prevent waste and leakage.

Furthermore, His Royal Highness reminded the recipients of state honours that these distinctions are not merely symbols of appreciation, but also come with significant trust and responsibility.

“I want to make it clear that I will not compromise on this matter, and will not hesitate to revoke these honours if any misconduct occurs which tarnishes the reputation of the royal institution or the country,” he said.

In the investiture ceremony, Tengku Ampuan Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah led the list of 24 recipients of state honours.

Tunku Azizah was conferred the Darjah Kebesaran Al-Sultan Abdullah Pahang Yang Amat Mulia - Peringkat Pertama Sri Setia Al-Sultan Abdullah Ahmad Shah along with eight other recipients, including Tengku Mahkota of Pahang Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah.
