A DAPSY leader said UMNO Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh should focus more on constructive issues facing the country rather than instigating divisive sentiments against fellow ministers in the unity government.

National DAPSY chief Dr Kelvin Yii said this in response to the Merlimau assemblyman’s statement concerning the recent school donation controversy, where the latter had sarcastically asked if gambling companies could be invited to organise programmes in schools next.

This is after DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook had

“The core issue is to obtain adequate funding for schools and education in Malaysia to complement the fundings from the government for these schools,” Yii said in a statement on Tuesday (July 30).

“No one wants to bring negative influence to the schools and the students, and such a principle is reflected in the Cabinet’s decision where logos and advertisement of such items are not allowed in schools.”

Dr Yii said Akmal’s remarks indicated his ignorance and clear misunderstanding of the Cabinet’s decision, adding that the UMNO lawmaker might be purposely trying to incite division by misleading the people on the Cabinet’s direction and intentions on the matter.

“Questions also need to be asked on his intentions to insinuate and single out a DAP minister when it is a collective Cabinet decision,” Dr Yii, who is also Bandar Kuching MP, stated.

“The fact is that such a practice (of bringing in sponsorships from brewery companies) have been on-going for 30 years but they have never been made an issue.”

Dr Yii said as a young leader, Akmal should be raising constructive ideas and alternatives to address the needs of the schools whether it is on adequate funding for all schools or even on important education reforms to ensure the quality of education in our schools is on par with that of developed countries.

“A responsible leader always finds the opportunity to unite and not divide,” he added.

A charity event organised by a Chinese school in Sepang, Selangor had recently courted controversy after it was found that a brewery company was one of the donors. - July 30, 2024
