PUTRAJAYA: The nation's security must not be taken lightly as attacks could come without warning, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today.

He said the country's peaceful and prosperous state should not be grounds to be complacent.

"Asean has countries that are among the most peaceful, except for some border issues.

"There are also issues pertaining to the South China Sea, but our diplomatic relations with the United States, Western countries and China remain good," Anwar said in his speech at the launch of the 2024 National Security Month here today.

He said the government places defence and home security as a priority, with huge allocations in its budget.

He said equally important was good governance within the security forces at all levels, including transparent procurement processes.

"Procurement causes leakages and this must be stopped and conducted responsibly," said Anwar, who is also the finance minister.

He cited several cases, including the recent shooting of policemen in Ulu Tiram, Johor; Sabah intrusion and claims by the purported heirs of the Sulu Sultanate against Sabah, which he said the government would not entertain.

He also emphasised the importance of beefing up cybersecurity, which was not discussed until recent years following the advancement of technology.

He said it should be accorded priority as it affects the overall national security, with proper training and necessary preparations.

"This includes cooperation with friendly countries to enhance our capacity as the people are the ones that will determine the country's peace and security."
