KUALA LUMPUR: Be cautious about buying television boxes or android decoder devices that stream copyrighted content, says Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

“This includes those claiming to have Sirim (Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia) certification but do not have legitimate access to content protected by copyright,” he said.

He said this in his speech read by the ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa who represented the minister to launch Panorama TV here on Thursday (Aug 1).

Panorama TV is an Internet television box that offers over 60 channels, with a particular focus on health channels.

It is an Internet TV set top box that is certified by Sirim QAS International, a certification agency registered with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

Its parent company Digistar Corporation’s group chief executive officer Datuk Wira Lee Wah Chong said that the Panorama TV box would reduce the use of illegal set-up boxes.

“There is a rampant use of illegal TV boxes, especially within households.

“Hotels cannot use illegal TV boxes as they will be caught and penalised. Hence we provide a service that offers quality content for a lower price,” he said.

During the launch, a memorandum of understanding was also signed between Panorama TV and Malaysia Budget Hotels Association (MyBHA) for members of MyBHA to access the service at a more competitive rate.

Its president Dr Sri Ganesh Michiel said that the signing of the agreement marks the beginning of collaboration and a significant step to enriching the experience of their member hotels.
