KOTA KINABALU: Starting January next year, the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) will only recognise the Electricity and Solar PV Competency Certificates it issues for any registration matters under the administration of ECoS.

ECoS Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Abdul Nasser Wahid said this was in line with the Electricity Supply Enactment 2024 and Regulation 60 in the Electricity Supply Regulations 2024 which stated that ECoS has taken over the regulatory power of electricity supply activities from the Energy Commission of Malaysia since Jan 3, 2024.

Therefore, all holders of existing Competency Certificates, whether issued by the Energy Commission (EC) and, or the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA), may apply for an equivalent certification from ECoS, he said.

He said they can do so after attending and passing the Electricity Supply Enactment (EBE) 2024 Module Course and Electricity Supply Regulations (PPBE) 2024.

“The conditions provided under the Electricity Supply Regulations 2024 clearly state that a person applying to become an ECoS Competent Person must have sufficient knowledge of the Enactment and its regulations,” said Abdul Nasser.

"Competency in the electricity field is one of the essential elements to ensure that installation works are safe and comply with electricity standards to protect consumers," he said.

He advised all holders of EC or SEDA Competency Certificates to directly contact any of the ECoS-accredited training centres for more information.

To date, ECoS has accredited 16 training centres to conduct the EBE 2024 Module Course and PPBE 2024.

The list of these training centres can be referred to on the official ECoS website.

The ECoS is a state statutory body and is the state’s regulator for the energy sector which aims to, among others, deliver secure, sustainable, affordable and accessible energy for Sabah.

ECoS’s regulatory scope covers on-shore gas Supply and electricity supply, including renewable energy.
