KOTA KINABALU: Sustainable forestry practices are crucial for the long-term success of Malaysia's timber industry, says Datuk Chan Foong Hin.

The Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister said in a statement that this not only aimed to ensure the continued success of the timber industry but also the preservation of natural forests.

He said this Sunday (Aug 18) after touring two timber factories in interior Sabah’s Keningau and the Sapulut Forest Reserve, which was named the "Best Model Forest Plantation in Malaysia" by the Malaysia Timber Industry Board last year.

Chan revealed that Sabah's timber industry continues to attract many foreign investors from, among others, Japan, South Korea, China and Taiwan.

“This strong international interest underscores Sabah’s growing reputation as a hub for sustainable and profitable forestry operations,” he added.

This two-day visit highlights the ministry’s ongoing efforts to support and enhance sustainable forestry practices across Malaysia, ensuring that the industry continues to thrive while preserving the nation’s rich natural resources for future generations.

Joining him was Tenom MP Noorita Sual.
