THERE is surely ‘dark forces’ out there to fan racial/religious hatred between the Malays and Chinese by capitalising on the Madani government’s pro-active “Free Palestinian” agenda.

This is saddening as divisive gap in inter-racial relationship between Malaysians seems to be growing wider by the day as the country gears up to usher in the 67th anniversary of its independence from its third and last colonial power, Britain (after the Portuguese and Dutch) in four days’ time (Aug 31).

A case in point is how they reacted to the fake news of Jalan Yap Ah Loy being re-named Jalan Palestin which went viral on TikTok (with an initial viewership of 57,900) after it was uploaded on Sunday (Aug 25), according to Bernama-initiated fact verifier MyCheck.my.

To sow discord among the multi-racial and multi-religious Malaysians, the irresponsible TikToker provocatively captioned his clip “Jalan Yap Ah Loy ditukar ke Jalan Palestin. Bila Kuala Lumpur nak tukar jadi negara Palestin?’” (literally, “Jalan Yap Ah Loy has been changed to Jalan Palestin. When does Kuala Lumpur intend to become a Palestinian state?).

Truth be told, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBK) has confirmed that Jalan Yap Ah Loy “still exists until today” while a verification by MyCheck.my found that the photo on the viralled video was in fact taken during the name change ceremony of Jalan Raja Laut 1 to Jalan Palestin on Sept 26, 2020.

DAP Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan has come forward to caution against the untruth being spread on social media by calling on netizens “not to be unduly swayed by falsehoods!”.

Interestingly, a commenter claimed that the video went viral “within the non-Malay WhatsApp group”.

“I’m tired of explaining the real facts @fahmi_fadzil (Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil). There is one more FA Cup video going viral. Likewise, it is targeting the non-Malays’ group,” revealed the netizen.

Another netizen called for the lodging of police report so that appropriate action can be taken against the culprits.

“This (widespread of fake news) is getting more chronic by the day in our country. More so emotions get heated up quickly as racial sentiment is involved. We can’t allow this to continue,” he lamented. - Aug 27, 2024
