KUALA LUMPUR: The online safety bill is expected to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat in October.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the bill would look at tackling potential future challenges, apart from addressing current issues including cyberbullying and scams.

"The bill will be drafted by the Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC) and presented to the cabinet before it is tabled in parliament," he told reporters after launching the International Legal Conference on Online Harms 2024 today.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said in her speech earlier said Universiti Sains Malaysia will conduct a social study on the proposed law.

It is aimed at gathering input from stakeholders including from the public.

The two-day conference is jointly organised by the Legal Affairs Division under the Prime Minister's Department, the Communications Ministry and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in collaboration with the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime; the police and Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam).

The proposed law to ensure online safety and tackle cyberbullying will include provisions for a kill switch.
