KUALA TERENGGANU: Halal certification plays a crucial role in protecting Muslim consumers from confusion and any form of exploitation, said Terengganu Umno chairman Datuk Rozi Mamat.

Halal certification, he said, does not touch only on commercial aspects but is also about preserving the purity of Islam and upholding the religion.

He said the halal industry should also be viewed as an economic driver for Malaysia instead of a burden.

"Islam provides clear guidelines on food and drink, and that halal certification is essential to ensure Muslims do not consume anything that does not comply with Islamic law," he said.

Rozi was responding to a recent statement from DAP vice-chairman Teresa Kok, who had opposed a proposal by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) which would require all food establishments that do not serve pork or alcohol to obtain halal certification.

Kok, also Seputeh member of parliament, said doing so could burden small businesses, restrict consumer freedom and potentially clash with Malaysia's cultural diversity.

Rozi said Kok's statement did not reflect an understanding of the social and religious responsibilities that should be upheld in a multi-religious society.

Halal certification, he said, is essential to maintaining harmony and the well-being of Malaysians, especially given Islam is recognised as the religion of the federation.

He also cited the various steps taken by the government, particularly Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, to further strengthen Malaysia's halal industry.

"Zahid, who is also the Rural and Regional Development Minister, has introduced various initiatives to ensure that halal certification is not only easier to obtain but also more reliable and competitive globally.

"The government's efforts include expediting the halal certification application process via digitisation and reducing bureaucratic hurdles, as well as reinforcing the country's position as a global halal hub," he said.

Rozi said the unity government is committed to ensuring the halal industry continues to grow to become a major driver of the national economy, rather than a burden.

"We urge all parties, especially Kok, to understand the importance of halal certification, respect the sensitivities of Muslims, and not view this issue as a burden," he said.
