KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, fresh from launching a book about Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang, praised the DAP veteran for his determination and resilience.
The prime minister said Lim was a "comrade-in-arms" in the struggle alongside other friends for decades without wavering or fear.
"Our friendship, which has been forged since I led the Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (ABIM), is certainly very meaningful.
"Saudara Kit's determination to plan for reforms stems from a deep concern over the growing problems plaguing the country, particularly the damaging political identity that influences the people's mindset, leading them to prioritise race and skin colour in their judgements.
"I chose to stand with Saudara Kit in this struggle since 1998. Upon reflecting on this decision, I am confident that it was the right choice, with not even the slightest regret," he said in a Facebook posting after launching the book in Ipoh.
Anwar said since he took over the helm of the nation two years ago, the government the government has continued to uphold the same struggle, which is to ensure Malaysia is recognised as a great, united nation that champions the rights of every citizen.
This, he said, was without neglecting the nation's fundamental identity — the Malay language as the national language, Islam as the religion of the federation, the Malay Rulers, and the rights of the Malays and Bumiputera.
"Therefore, in front of my comrades, I firmly state that I and the Madani government have never abandoned the struggle and reform agenda that we have supported together all this time.
"Thank you, Saudara Kit, for continuing to be a true and loyal friend. I appreciate every perspective, piece of advice, and support that has helped us witness the reform agenda become a reality for a better Malaysia."
