Malaysia not threatened by Bill Gates’ synthetic palm oil project.

Malaysia does not see the production of synthetic palm oil by US start-up company, C16 Biosciences, as a threat to natural palm oil supply chain, particularly when produced under the best agricultural practices and sustainability standards.

“Even if they succeed, given the very large odds stacked against such a technology, their impact upon natural palm oil supply chains will be minimal. The hype created in various Western media around this sounds like another stab wounding aimed at the palm oil industry.

KUALA LUMPUR (July 30): The FBM KLCI fell 0.64% at the midday break today as shares in index-linked banking stocks succumbed to the targeted moratorium plan, with Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) and Public Bank Bhd leading the declines.

“However, we remain neutral on banks as we envisage banks’ 2Q20F to be weaker on-quarter due to the modification loss and potentially higher loan loss provisioning (LLP). Our picks for the sector are Public Bank (TP: RM19.13), RHB Bank (TP: RM5.60) and AMMB (TP: RM3.60),” said CGS-CIMB.

Green Packet will be paying US$10 million for a 100% stake in Xendity, with a combination of cash and shares and with performance-based tranches. It will initially pay US$1.5 million cash plus issue of new shares worth US$4 million.

Glove bulls regain strength

“We are expecting higher earnings (net profit) in the second half of 2020, as selling prices continue to be on the rise.” — Affin Hwang Investment Bank Bhd analyst Ng Chi Hoong.

"Apart from that, as more economic activities open up in the world, it also helps to drive demand for gloves for the usage in the non-medical segments, like retail, F&B (food and beverages), among others," said Ng.

Supermax’s reported a 24% increase in revenue to 447 million ringgit for the three months through March, partly driven by an “exponential surge in demand due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” it said in its quarterly release. The company churns out 24 billion gloves annually and is looking to expand that to 44 billion by 2024, according to its 2019 annual report. It bought additional land to increase manufacturing capacity this month.

Most analysts are positive on Supermax! Eight of the 10 tracked by Bloomberg recommend buying the stock, and none advises to sell.

Supermax remains a favorite. The fact that the company manufactures its own brand of gloves means it may be able to sell at higher prices directly to end-customers, according to CGS-CIMB’s Aw, who expects the industry boom to last past the immediate effect of Covid-19.

Kenanga Research analyst Raymond Choo Ping Khoon said, Supermax has more good days ahead, not just because of the “abnormal demand and acute supply tightness,” he wrote in a June 10 note, but also thanks to the “scrupulous execution of its expansion plans.” And the recent land acquisitions showed the company’s commitment toward future growth, the analyst said.

Aminvestment Bank Research: National Economic Recovery Plan to bode well for auto sector.

KUALA LUMPUR (June 6): AmInvestment Bank Research has upgraded the auto sector to "overweight" (from "neutral") and said the cut in sales tax for motor vehicles sales announced in the government’s National Economic Recovery Plan (Penjana) will a boost for the sector.

It increased its financial year ending Dec 31, 2020 (FY20) earnings forecast by 15% to factor in higher Perodua sales.

Meanwhile, DRB-Hicom Bhd’s FV has been upgraded to RM2.49, from RM1.87(with its “buy” call maintained), with its earnings forecast for FY20 raised by 7% to reflect better Proton and Honda sales.
