Bank Negara’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has raised its overnight policy rate (OPR) by 25 basis points (bps) to 2.75%, in line with expectations.

The ceiling and floor rates of the corridor of the OPR are correspondingly increased to 3.00% and 2.50%, respectively,” Bank Negara said in a statement.

The central bank said the global economy continues to be weighed down by rising cost pressures, tighter global financial conditions, and strict containment measures in China.

These factors more than offset the support from positive labour market conditions and the full reopening of most economies and international borders.

Underlying inflation, as measured by core inflation, is projected to average closer to the upper end of the 2.0% -3.0% forecast range in 2022, having averaged2.7% year-to-date, given some demand-driven price pressure amid the high-cost environment.

“Moving into 2023, headline and core inflation are expected to remain elevated amid both demand and cost pressures, as well as any changes in domestic policy measures. The extent of upward pressures to inflation will remain partly contained by existing price controls, subsidies, and the remaining spare capacity in the economy

S&P Global Ratings expects the Malaysian banking sector's loan growth to stay at 5 to 6 per cent in 2023 on the back of the country's economic stability which will support the creditworthiness of Malaysian businesses and consumers.

Malaysia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is forecast to grow at 6.6 per cent in 2022 and an average of 4.5 per cent over the next three years, it said.

it noted that asset quality is expected to deteriorate and the industry's non-performing loan (NPL) ratio will likely rise to 2.5 to 3.0 per cent over the next two years from 1.8 per cent as of end-June 2022 following the expiry of moratorium programmes.

'’Loans to low-income households and small to midsize enterprises (SMEs) struggling to recover from the pandemic could be at risk. Higher inflation and interest rates are causing further pain. Banks' high provisioning buffers should also limit additional provisioning requirements despite rising NPLs.

"Meanwhile, credit costs will decline to 30 to 40 basis points (bps) but stay higher than pre-pandemic levels as banks are likely to stay cautious amid global headwinds,

#Candi,

Cyber security and money laundering are 2 different things.

Cyber security cannot detect money laundering. It protect clients' account from being hacked and stolen.

Money laundering....you better goggle to understand what it means.

As for Chinese led bank being kedukut, I hope you are not too used to getting free money for nothing.
Or maybe you are upset bcoz they won't loan you money, worried you cant pay them back.

@PassionateInvestor- Can say that way as PBB always declared 2x Dividend in a year with payout ratio around 50%. This Q3 their EPS 8.19, they declare 4.0 sen dividend first. In Q4, if performance similar or higher, can expect between 4.0 - 5.0 sen dividend. All this at the back of the prosperity tax, otherwise can pocket more.

best ever profit. what a monster quarter. thank you for the surprise dividend

why surprise dividend? suppose every year also 2 times dividend (except 2020 which is Covid19). the 4 sen dividend total 12 sen for the year is average at best - 2021 its 15.2 sen, 2020 its 13 sen. i really wish PBB can pay a little higher. but i think overall the bank performance only average at best. even my investment in public mutual funds and public PRS from POSITIVE last year to NEGATIVE this year. really lousy performance. regretted investing into PM. the downside in PBB is that most of the bank's income is from Malaysia. since the local economy currently sux, not much profitability. they should diversify some more to other country like other banks to capitalize on growth

Public Bank Bhd's net profit for the third quarter ended Sept 30, 2022 rose 16.8% to RM1.59 billion from RM1.36 billion a year earlier due to higher net interest income and lower loan impairment allowance. Net interest income was 16.5% higher at RM338.1 million while its loan impairment allowance was 70.4% lower at RM228.5 million, partially offset by 10.4% higher other operating expenses of RM101.5 million. Quarterly revenue increased to RM5.5 billion from RM4.81 billion. The bank declared a second interim dividend of four sen per share, payable on Dec 23.
