any ideas on the effect of IFRS17 on Takaful income reporting? I wonder whether how severe is the impact..
2021-03-16 12:40 | Report Abuse
Hi yuwei, for example LPI, I think LPI provides MRTA to its client from the home loans of PBBANK? As such, it will be affected I guess? Based on your professional background, how the insurer would address the impact of IFRS17?

Hi freedomfund, yes, it is rather annoying to see Top Management keep dumping the shares once they have LTIP shares in their hands.
My concern is: They start dumping their LTIP shares since 2015-2016, and during that time, STMB profit is way lower than the current level. So, are you saying that their Top Management is not so confident on the company performance since 2015, even STMB shows consistent profit growth year after year since 2015 till now?

Hi Yuwei, rgd. the day-1 profit for MRTA business, is it applicable only for those MRTA that was paid in one lump sum when the loan is applied?
How about when the MRTA is combined with the loan and paid by installment spreading over 10-15 years. In this case, is this still counted as day-1 profit for insurer?
And, which scenario is more common for MRTA payment (direct payment vs installment)?

Thanks YuWei. If due to IFRS17, investing in takaful counter is riskier than conventional insurance counter?
And, what are the key factors determining one to select either takaful insurance or conventional insurance, as the premium paid is about similar nowadays as u said?

Hi Suwei, apart from the syariah-compliance investment & profit-sharing scheme in Takaful Insurance, what is the other notable difference between the business models between takaful vs conventional insurance?
And, is the market (potential customer) of takaful and conventional insurance well distinguished? For example, why certain peoples prefer to buy takaful insurance, instead of choosing the medical insurance offered by a conventional insurance player?

John, u r right. But nowadays investor dun care one, as long as it is renewable energy related (after biden wins), ppl just buy like no tomorrow. Even shit counter like slvest ppl treat it as gem as its speculative element is quite intense. Cypark for me is better than slvest in that sense (less speculative than slvest in a sense it is able to secure project); however, what piss me off is their management being not truthful and just report the good side of the company operation.. This is definitely not a good management team, my 2 cents.

Samurai is popular amongst Malay and DPI is popular amongst Chinese, based on what I know. Some expert users said samurai is just "branding", and DPI outperforms Samurai in quality. Probably Samurai quite aggresive in online marketing, as compared to DPI as DPI just started market their products online. Those oldies might aware on the existence of DPI, but not those youngsters.

Read the last sentence (quoted from their MoM):
In the Company’s 2019 Annual Report, the Company had a significant
increase of contract assets from RM294.0 million in 2018 to RM539.0 million
as at the financial year ended 31 October 2019. Given that contract assets
are classified as current assets, why it has not been realised into
receivables/cash and yet it increased?
When would the cash flow of the Company turn into positive cash flow?
Dato’ Daud replied as follows:-
A few of the Company’s engineering, procurement, construction and
commissioning (“EPCC”) projects are on turnkey basis, which includes the
facilitation of the financing of the projects by the Company via turnkey
financing. The Company is financing the projects itself and obtaining
repayment from the clients through the proceeds received by the clients from
the sale of electricity to TNB at the same time. The repayments from the
clients are certain as the cash inflow and revenue of the clients from the sale
of electricity are certain due to the PPA signed with TNB whereby TNB is
obligated to purchase the energy from the clients at a fixed price.
The Company’s trade receivables are designed to match with the cash inflows
and revenue of the clients from the sale of electricity and thus, the concern
will not be on the collectability or the recoverability of the trade receivables.
In the current scenario, it is expected to have more cash outflow than cash
inflow due to the Company’s capital investment in the projects and the cash
inflow can only be noticed clearly upon the commencement of the commercial
operation date (“COD”) of the projects. The Company is expecting a
significant amount of revenue and cash inflow to be generated in year 2021
from the completion of LSS 1 project, LSS 2 project and the Solid Waste
Modular Advanced Recovery and Treatment waste-to-energy (“SMART
WTE”) plant.
Notwithstanding that, the Company is also expecting a significant cash
outflow in year 2021 and 2022 due to capital investment of LSS 4 project and
LSS 5 project.

Hi bursabigbull, thanks for your comments. Ya, cypark did give beautiful profit after tax in their income statement. Increasing trend some more as they lock in progressive "construction profit". But, as a businessman, what we want to see is whether this business generates cash to reward shareholders, or to fund internal operations.. For me, it seems to us as investors (and most fund managers) did not buy the so-called "construction profit" from cypark.
Well, if u do business with end users like us, it could be easier to get back money. Otherwise, it could be another story.
Ya, I do admit that this is a great business, if and only if the company can manage the cash flow well. This kind of powerplant business is capital intensive, and it requires a lot of upfront capital.
As investor, it is not about biden said promote "green energy", then go buy those renewable energy counter. If you are speculator, it could be another story la.
Try to drive to WTE Port Dickson and see what happens there. Then u will know how to do a better/wiser decision.
2021-02-06 09:01 | Report Abuse
Well, you might be right KingFisher, if you believe what the Management said. Anyway, they have told the shareholders all this while COD for WTE since 2018, has it been realized?? Have you ever monitored the progress of the WTE construction progress physically at Port Dickson, or you just get the so-called COD date from the web?
Do you know in order to commission the WTE, what are the process involved? Do you think it is as simple as press the on button after construction finishes, and let it run and generate money? After deducting all the debts, borrowings, etc. how much left to be given back to the shareholders? Have you taken that into account?
Good luck ya.
