One of the physicians treating President Trump, Dr. Brian Garibaldi, said Sunday the President is being given the steroid drug dexamethasone as part of his Covid-19 treatment.

It's an indication that Trump's condition is worrying, as the drug should not be given to anyone who is not ill enough to justify the downsides of taking steroids -- including that it suppresses the immune system.

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - Argentina’s coronavirus death toll leapt above 20,000 on Thursday as a large number of previously untallied fatalities were added to the total, emphasizing how the country has gone from regional role model to one of the worst-hit in the world.

The South American nation, which slowed the spread of the virus with a strict lockdown in March, reported 14,001 new COVID-19 cases to take the total confirmed infections to 765,002, one of the 10 highest in the world.

The health ministry added 3,352 deaths, most of which were from a backlog of fatalities from the province of Buenos Aires, taking the total to 20,288, just behind Russia.

The grains producing nation currently has one of the highest positive rates in the region, with confirmed daily cases versus tests topping 50% over the last week. The government has pledged to ramp up testing.

Lari warned that 30 of Iran’s 31 provinces are currently red zones with high risk of coronavirus transmission.

Iran is struggling to contain the pandemic since February, when the first cases were confirmed in the city of Qom.

In recent weeks, Iran has seen a significant surge in new infections and fatalities after restrictions were eased, drawing criticism from health activists.

Paris will likely move to a "maximum alert" level for COVID-19, France's health minister said on Thursday, with the government set to introduce new measures to control the spread of the virus as early as Monday if the situation does not improve over the next couple of days.

One of the measures that could be introduced in the capital is the closure of bars and restaurants, an action already taken in Marseille and Aix, cities currently designated at "maximum alert," the second to last alert level before a formal state of emergency is declared.

Health minister Olivier Véran said three key COVID-19 indicators had been hit in Paris: the city has 263 new COVID-19 cases daily per 100,000 people, 105 new cases daily per 100,000 people over the age of 65, and between 30-35% of intensive care units now treat COVID-19 patients.

It comes as France recorded nearly 14,000 new cases of COVID-19 in 24 hours and 63 deaths. In Paris, there were between 800 and 1200 new cases recorded daily last week. For weeks, the number of people being hospitalised with the virus has been rising.

During his nearly one hour speech, France's health minister explained that the virus was spreading "too fast" throughout France, stating that the country was in a "phase of worsening."

An estimated 3,302 more people tested positive for a SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection, the most reported by health agency RIVM in a single day. Wednesday's total broke the previous record, set just one day earlier, by nearly ten percent.

The agency estimated that 9,227 people have tested positive for the virus this week, 35 percent more than last week. The data released on Wednesday also showed a near 40-percent increase over the single-day figure from last Wednesday, which was also record-breaking at the time.

The newest daily figures showed included 377 more infected residents of Amsterdam, a 45 percent gain over last week. Rotterdam reported 259 more infected residents, a 67 percent hike, and 249 people live in The Hague, up 96 percent from last Wednesday.

During a press conference earlier this week, Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Health Minister Hugo de Jonge said they expected five thousand infections per day in the near future. It was part of the Cabinet's justification to introduce new social restrictions in the Netherlands which took effect on Tuesday evening.

Thirteen more deaths were also tied to Covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, and 48 more people were hospitalized with the illness, the data released on Wednesday showed.

India’s coronavirus tally has crossed the 6 million mark after 82,170 new cases were reported across the country, giving the sub-continent the world's fastest infection rate. The number of Indian deaths from the disease is approaching 100,000.

With the latest million infections coming in 11 days and the number of deaths from the disease at over 95,540, new infections in India are currently being reported faster than anywhere else in the world.

The country’s case numbers have been rising swiftly over the past few months, adding 80,000 to 90,000 fresh infections each day since India started reporting the world’s highest daily rises from late August.

From the first Covid-19 case recorded in India on 30 January, it took six months for the country to reach a million infections. However, the rise has been rapid since then and it has taken just two more months for India to reach 6 million cases.
