New coronavirus measures cannot be avoided in the Netherlands if there is no improvement in the number of new infections in the coming 24 to 72 hours, prime minister Mark Rutte told reporters after the weekly cabinet conference. The number of new coronavirus infections in the Netherlands continues to rise, with a further 5,983 cases registered with public health institute RIVM in the 24 hours to Friday morning.
By Friday a further 69 people had been admitted to hospital, taking the total to 1,139, of whom 239 are in intensive care. Hospitals are working hard to make sure everyone can be treated, but non-essential operations are being delayed, Rutte said. ‘And there is a risk that heart and cancer operations may have to be postponed as well,’ he said.

Italy was grappling Friday with fears of a second coronavirus wave similar to the ones seen in Britain, France and Spain, as it registered over 5,000 new infections in 24 hours.
"We're under extreme pressure," the World Health Organization's Italian government adviser Walter Ricciardi said, warning that spaces in COVID-19 hospitals were running out in the worst-hit regions. Italy registered 5,372 new cases Friday, the health ministry said, nearly 1,000 more than on Thursday. The country has not seen such high numbers of recorded new infections since mid-April. But Ricciardi said the rise in cases could reach those levels in Italy just as winter begins and common influenza strikes."When the flu comes, we risk having 16 thousand cases in a day," he said in an interview with broadcaster Sky TG24

Argentina has the world’s highest rate of positive COVID-19 tests, according to Oxford-linked tracker Our World In Data, with nearly six out of 10 yielding an infection, a reflection of low testing levels and loose enforcement of lockdown rules.

Argentina hit 809,728 confirmed cases on Monday, with a seven-day rolling average of around 12,500 new daily infections. The country, which started strongly against the virus, passed 20,000 fatalities last week.

After several days of falls, the number of new coronavirus cases reported by the central Health Ministry in its daily report on the epidemic shot up on Tuesday. Of the 11,988 new infections diagnosed, 5,187 of them (43%) correspond to Madrid. In Monday’s report, this percentage was 28% and on Friday it was 22%. The new cases in the region represent the highest figure so far in this second wave of the health crisis.

That was not the only record figure to be seen in Tuesday’s data. The number of Covid-19-related fatalities to be added to the total came in at 261, which is the highest figure since the first wave of the virus was brought under control between March and May thanks to Spain’s national lockdown, one of the strictest in the world. Of these, 120 were from the Madrid region, also a new high in this second wave.

The 14-day cumulative number of coronavirus cases per 100,000 inhabitants – the principal indicator used to compare the epidemiological situation between regions, and the main parameter established by the central government and regional administrations for the implementation of restrictions – has risen sharply in Madrid. According to Tuesday’s report, it went from 587 to 710 in a single day, way above the national average of 273. As such, the region has returned to levels similar to those seen in the last two weeks.

The Health Ministry also reported 883 new coronavirus patients in Spain’s hospitals, with 71 requiring intensive care unit (ICU) treatment.Madrid continues to be the region with the highest ICU bed occupation, at 40.5%.

MOSCOW, October 7. /TASS/. The recent days’ coronavirus spread in Russia makes us believe that the number of new cases will outstrip the spring indicators, Professor of the Gamaleya Research Institute Anatoly Alshtein said on the Moscow 24 television channel on Wednesday.

"Today’s numbers show that there is a certain chance that the epidemic might subside. However, one day does not solve anything. Therefore, we are now in a position when we should just watch the epidemic. It is impossible yet to say precisely when it will reach the peak. Judging by how the epidemic has evolved over the past week or in the past ten days, it could have been expected that it will outstrip the spring [wave]."

LONDON — Major European economies are downgrading already dire economic forecasts on the back of a second wave of coronavirus infections sweeping through the continent, with over 6.3 million cases now reported in the region.

The Bank of Spain warned Tuesday that strict measures to contain the spike in virus cases could push the country into a worse-than-expected economic crisis. The bank warned that in its worst-case scenario, gross domestic product (GDP) could contract 12.6% in 2020. In a less pessimistic forecast, GDP is forecast to contract 10.5%.

Political infighting in Spain has worsened as infections have risen, with capital Madrid particularly badly hit, leading to parts of the city being put in lockdown. Spain has the highest number of cases in Europe with 825,410 reported infections, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. The World Health Organization puts Europe’s total tally of cases at just under 6,338,000.

France, the euro zone’s second largest economy, is also warning that an economic rebound post-lockdown is likely to plateau in the fourth quarter, as a spike in cases stifles business activity. France has the second highest number of infections after Spain, with 675,736 confirmed cases, according to JHU.

Germany, Europe’s largest economy, has announced further restrictions in major cities, including Berlin and Frankfurt, to stem a rise in cases.

In Berlin, restaurants, bars, local shops and other businesses will have to shut between 23:00 p.m. and 06:00 a.m. while in Frankfurt, bars and restaurants will have to close at 10 p.m. Germany’s central bank, the Bundesbank, said back in June that it expected economic output to shrink by 7% in 2020.

Germany reported 2,639 new cases Tuesday, and a further 2,828 on Wednesday, data from public health body the Robert Koch Institute shows, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to just over 306,000.

GENEVA: The WHO estimated Monday that 10 percent of the world has been infected by the new coronavirus – way more than has been recorded – as it mulled speeding up internal reforms.

To date, more than 35 million cases of Covid-19 have been registered worldwide, including some 1.04 million who have died, according to an AFP tally based on official sources.

But the World Health Organization now estimates that around a tenth of the planet's 7.8 billion or so people have already been infected since the virus first surfaced in China late last year – more than 20 times the official count.

"Our current best estimate tells us that about 10 percent of the global population may have been infected by this virus," WHO emergencies director Michael Ryan told a special meeting of the agency's executive board.

He stressed that infection levels varied "from urban to rural, it varies between different groups."

"But what it does mean is that the vast majority of the world remains at risk," he warned.
