Israel’s coronavirus czar warned Sunday that virus numbers were reaching “emergency” levels that could see the country face 600 deaths a month, and ordered hospitals to add new virus wards.

Prof. Ronni Gamzu said in an interview with Channel 12 news that he fears the number of COVID-19 patients in serious condition could reach 800 by the end of the week, a number that has been frequently cited as the maximum Israeli hospitals can cope with.

Gamzu said he feared that at current rates, Israel will see some 20 deaths a day, or 600 per month, nearly half of the national toll since the start of the pandemic.

“Our situation is very grave,” he said. Israel recorded 30 new deaths in 24 hours on Saturday.

The Health Ministry on Sunday reported another 2,122 coronavirus cases since midnight Saturday, bringing the number of infections since the pandemic began to 187,902. It also confirmed another six deaths since, raising the national toll to 1,256.

The ministry said there are 52,577 confirmed active cases, including 643 people in serious condition, with a record 170 on ventilators.

Gamzu said that with the number of serious cases likely to soon hit 800, he had ordered all hospitals to open additional coronavirus wards, warning “we’re in an emergency,” and noting there would be some reduction in elective medical procedures.

Parts of the Spanish capital Madrid are to be subject to lockdown restrictions to curb a rise in Covid-19, as cases across Europe continue to spike.

From Monday, more than 850,000 people in the Madrid region will face limits on travel and sizes of groups.

JAKARTA (Sept 20): Indonesia has recorded 3,989 new positive cases of Covid-19 within 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases to 244,676.

Based on its official government website on Covid-19 today, 107,370 patients were being monitored for the viral infection.

JAKARTA, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 4,168 within one day to 240,687, with the death toll adding by 112 to 9,448, the Health Ministry said on Saturday.
The virus has spread to all the country's 34 provinces.

Covid-19: UK test and trace 'barely functional' as 11 million face lockdown.

The coronavirus test and trace system was condemned as “barely functional” today as its tsar admitted that demand was up to four times capacity, while 90% of tests were failing to hit the 24-hour turnaround target.

The Guardian has seen documents showing tracers taking up to two weeks to contact friends, relatives and workmates of people diagnosed with Covid-19 – the entire length of the self-isolation period.

But amid growing anger and lengthening queues at testing centres, Dido Harding, head of the £10bn NHS test-and-trace programme designed to prevent a second wave of Covid-19, told MPs on Thursday: “I strongly refute that the system is failing.”

It came as sources said Leeds and Lancashire were expected to face enhanced lockdown measures, bringing the number of people subject to restrictions to more than 11 million, including nearly 2 million in north-east England. Official figures confirmed a 75% increase in positive weekly cases across England last week.

Just 1.9% of people using a home test kit in England got their results within 24 hours in the week to 9 September, according to official figures – the lowest percentage since test and trace was launched in May. Results from 33.3% of in-person tests were turned around within 24 hours, down from 66.5% the previous week, creating knock-on delays for contacts required to self-isolate.

The World Health Organization on Thursday warned of "alarming rates of transmission" of Covid-19 across Europe and cautioned against shortening quarantine periods as countries in the region scrambled to find ways to reduce infections without resorting to new lockdowns.The WHO's regional director for Europe Hans Kluge said a September surge -- Europe set a new record last week, with some 54,000 cases recorded in 24 hours -- "should serve as a wake-up call for all of us".

Turkey reported Thursday 1,648 new cases and 66 deaths from COVID-19 within the past 24 hours.

Turkey has been seeing a resurgence in coronavirus infections for the past few weeks, with daily infection rates slowly but steadily climbing.

In an effort to prevent a further increase in infection rates, the Interior Ministry last week declared wearing masks outside mandatory across all provinces. The order previously applied to only the worst-hit cities, with many provinces only requiring mask use in often-crowded streets.

France is to implement extra measures to curb the Covid-19 epidemic in the cities of Lyon and Nice, the health minister said Thursday, adding to the three other regions deemed as virus “red zones” where additional measures are already in place. The country registered more than 10,000 new confirmed coronavirus cases on Thursday, setting a new daily record.

Health Minister Olivier Véran did not say what the extra measures for Lyon and Nice would be, but that local officials in those cities would have until the weekend to submit their plans for extra measures to the government in Paris.

France has this month seen a resurgence in the number of virus cases. Numbers in hospital and intensive care with Covid-19 are climbing too, though they are still a long way short of the peak reached in the spring.

Addressing French citizens, Véran said: “We are in a situation, especially in the regions that I have mentioned, where I can only ask you to redouble your efforts, particularly in reducing the number of people you see each day.”

“We have a very serious situation unfolding before us,” WHO’s regional director for Europe, Hans Kluge, said Thursday in a press briefing on the epidemiological situation in the region. “Weekly cases have now exceeded those reported when the pandemic first peaked in Europe in March.”

He said that, last week, the region’s weekly tally exceeded 300,000 patients.

“More than half of European countries have reported a greater-than-10% increase in cases in the past two weeks. Of those, seven countries have seen newly reported cases increase more than two-fold in the same period,” he added.

LONDON — There are growing concerns in Europe at what is being seen as an alarming rise in coronavirus cases, with the number of new daily infections reaching record highs in some countries.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) warned Wednesday that the 14-day case notification rate (the number of newly reported cases) for the EU, European Economic Area and the U.K. “has been increasing for more than 50 days, with over half of all EU countries currently experiencing an increase in cases.”

Spain, which has the highest number of confirmed coronavirus infections in Europe at 614,360, according to data collated by Johns Hopkins University (JHU), is reportedly set to announce targeted lockdowns in places where the virus is spreading rapidly, and renewed restrictions of movement on Friday.

Meanwhile in France, the number of new daily cases reported Wednesday (9,784) was among the highest ever reported in the country. It was just below an all-time record of 10,561 new cases recorded on Saturday. The number of people being treated in intensive care units for Covid-19 also rose for the 20th straight day Wednesday, Reuters reported, to a three-month high of 803. The total number of cases in France stands at 404,888, according to the French Health Ministry.

Remarking on the rise in cases, French President Emmanuel Macron said Wednesday that the virus was circulating “quicker and quicker in certain parts of the country,” Reuters reported.

The U.K., which has the third-highest number of cases in Europe, at 380,677 according to JHU data, has seen an alarming rise in cases across various parts of northern England in recent weeks. It has started to reintroduce measures to restrict social gatherings, with the number of people allowed to meet now limited to six in England. Stricter measures targeting north-east England could be announced Thursday, the BBC reported.

Italy, which was the epicenter of Europe’s first coronavirus outbreak in February but now has the fourth-highest number of reported infections, at 291,442 to date, has also seen cases rise. The health ministry said Wednesday that Italy has registered 1,452 new cases in the last 24 hours, up from 1,229 new cases on Tuesday, although this was partly attributed to a sharp increase in coronavirus tests, news agency ANSA reported. Nonetheless, the health ministry noted that Italy is seeing the highest number of active cases since June, with 40,532 people currently infected with the coronavirus.

Germany, which was seen as a poster-child for its handling of the first wave of the coronavirus cases, having managed to keep its death toll low compared to its number of cases, has seen a slight rise in cases.

The Robert Koch Institute, which monitors the epidemic in Germany, said Wednesday that “the increase in the number of cases reported since mid-July had stabilized at a slightly higher level in calendar weeks 35 (beginning August 24) and 36, but since calendar week 37, a slight increase can be observed again.” It added that more young people have become infected in recent weeks.

So far, the death toll from rising infections has been significantly lower than in spring and early summer when the virus first hit Europe, but the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that this could change as winter approaches.

Spain reports 239 new coronavirus deaths, the highest figure so far during the second wave of the epidemic.

Infections continue to rise, according to Health Ministry data, with 11,193 new cases detected – 31% of them in Madrid.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany has risen by 2194 to 265,857, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases announced on Thursday.The total number of deaths in the country has reached 9,371.

Indonesia reported 3,635 new coronavirus infections on Thursday, bringing the country's total number of cases to 232,628, the health ministry's website showed.

The ministry also reported 122 additional deaths from the virus, bringing the total number of fatalities to 9,222, the highest in Southeast Asia.

The Philippines' health ministry on Thursday reported 3,375 new coronavirus infections and 53 additional deaths.

In a bulletin, the ministry said total confirmed cases in the Philippines have reached 276,289, the most in Southeast Asia, while deaths have increased to 4,785.

France reported it third-highest number of daily additional infections on record. Health authorities reported new 9,784 confirmed cases and 46 more deaths.
For the second successive day, the Netherlands recorded its worst increase in the number of new infections.

On Wednesday, India reported the biggest single-day spike of nearly 98,000 new coronavirus infections, pushing the nationwide tally to 5,115,000 infections. Over 1,100 fresh fatalities pushed the death toll to 83,251.

“Some surgeries are being postponed to cope with the spike in coronavirus infections.

“But there’s no question of massively postponing operations as we had to in March and April,” Mr Arnaud said.

“Further delays would be too damaging in terms of public health.

“We’ll now have to deal head-on with two waves of patients: Covid cases and all the others, who are very numerous.”

However, Mr Arnaud said the main worry for his hospital was the number of staff available.

“We have recently recruited about 100 health workers but we won’t have as many staff available for the Covid cases as we did in the spring.”

Bordeaux’s main hospital has a total of 24 coronavirus infected patients in its intensive care unit.

“The number has more than doubled in the past 10 days,” said Yann Bubien, the hospital’s director.

“All the warning signals are flashing red.”

Britain has recorded nearly 4,000 new Covid-19 cases for the first time since the start of May and the number of people being admitted to hospital has risen once again, adding to mounting fears the outbreak is spiralling out of control again.

Infections have risen 40 per cent in a week because of the 3,991 new positive tests. The rolling seven-day average of daily infections currently stands at 3,286, up on the 2,358 last Wednesday. The UK hasn't recorded 4,000 cases in a day since May 8 after the crisis fizzled out and dropped to record lows in July.

The Spanish capital will introduce selective lockdowns in urban areas where the coronavirus is spreading faster, regional health authorities announced Wednesday.
