JCY (5161) If BIG Brother Does Well, So Should Little Brother
If the share prices of Western Digital (WDC) and Seagate Technology (STX) on Nasdaq is doing well, there is no reason to think that share prices of JCY International (JCY) should do any lesser. The logic, simply because JCY's business well-being is highly corelated to its customers WDC and STX since they co-exist within the same value chain. As much as WDC and STX are both very important customer of JCY, no-one should discount this business link.
Yes, JCY will continue to outperform as this is only the beginning. How?
1. Second half of 2024 results are expected to be better than First Half as confidently guided by management in their result review and commentary in May.
2. Operational Leverage and Economies of Scale for JCY is Much Greater Than its customers'. At slightly below 50% plant utilization rate, JCY has already clocked in RM5.34mn in net profit. Ask any production manager or factory owners what importance is when manufactures goods get pass breakeven utilization rate. When utilization rate surpasses breakeven level, profits can flow in exponentially with every improvement in utilization rate (also known as economies of scale).

TA Research, which has maintained its “overweight” call on the sector, noted the DC capacity in Malaysia is on track for significant expansion, with projections indicating an increase from 195 megawatt (MW) to 607MW by 2025.
“With the average construction cost of a DC in Malaysia ranging from RM35mil to RM50mil per MW, as outlined by the Research and Market’s report, the projected 607MW expansion translates to a gross construction value of RM21.2bil to RM30.4bil,” it said.
TA Research added such investments amounts are bound to benefit local players in the construction sector and industries related to building data centres.

It certainly wasn't a sensible action by EPF disposing large blocks of TNB shares considering DC theme play will last multi years in M'sia. DC business is a perpetual growing business. It will be the greatest M'sia ever experience since Merdeka! EPF is so big and should not just join the ‘herd movement’, buying when the market is buying or selling when the market is selling. This will escalate the volatility in the market. Given the improving market outlook, there is no reason for institutional investors to sell. EPF’s paring of its shareholding in TNB affect support for the local market. IDK, what about foreign funds nibbling of TNB shares lately?

PETALING JAYA: The utilities sector will remain buoyed by healthy demand of electricity in the country, according to RHB Research. It noted that in the first quarter of 2024 (1Q24), electricity demand rose at a much faster 9.6% year-on-year (y-o-y) versus gross domestic product growth of 4.2%, largely driven by stronger commercial (up 11.2%) and domestic (up 16.8%) segments. Demand hit a new peak of 20,028MW in April.
TNB highlighted that the strong commercial demand growth was largely led by the commercialization of a 150MW data centre in 1Q24. It added there were two projects with a total capacity of 535MW completed under the Green Lane Pathway and another seven more (around 165MW) to be completed by this year.

KUALA LUMPUR (Apr 14): Electric utility giant Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) announced that its new coal-fired power plant in Manjung, Perak — dubbed “Manjung 4” — has begun commercial operations and will transmit an additional 1,000 megawatt (MW) into the national grid. TNB said the power supplied by the Manjung 4 plant has raised TNB Janamanjung’s generating capacity to 3,100MW, turning it into the largest independent power producer in Peninsular Malaysia today. Located on a 325ha land, TNB said Manjung 4 is Southeast Asia’s most efficient power plant at present and that it employs the super ultracritical combustion technology, which has met the stringent environmental standards set by the World Bank and Malaysia’s Department of Environment. Besides Manjung 4, TNB Janamanjung operates three other coal-fired power plants with a combined generating capacity of 2,100 megawatt. "Manjung 4 will contribute towards further stability of the grid system and enhance reliability of supply” said Shamsul Ahmad, the managing director of the group’s wholly-owned subsidiary TNB Janamanjung Sdn Bhd.

The power and water factors
Holistic management of resources crucial amid data centre frenzy. Data centres made up nearly 80% of the RM144.7bil approved digital investments into Malaysia. There must be more focus on upgrading grid infrastructure in places with over-concentration of data centres unlike the glove manufacturing craze in 2020 and electric vehicles in 2022, many deals struggled to turn profitable or to even take place, the rush for data centres seems more promising, given the backing by technology giants like Microsoft, Google and Nvidia.
Analysts point out that the main driver. for electricity demand growth in Malaysia will be data centres moving forward. Tenaga Nasional Bhd's (TNB) electricity sales already hit a record in the first quarter of 2024 at 31,899 gigawatts.
The industry veteran notes that electricity sales to data centres are "very lucrative". To exclusively meet the robust power needs of data centres, TNB had announced the setting up of the GREEN LANE PATHWAY last year to accelerate the electricity supply process. Before the Green Lane Pathway, the electricity supply process was between 36 months and 48 months.
However, with the Green Lane Pathway, the time has been reduced to 12 months.
Kinergy Advancement Bhd (KAB) executive deputy chairman cum group managing director Datuk Lai Keng Onn tells StarBizWeek that the country has to be cautions given that the power demand from data centres will peak in about three years. If the national grid is not improved adequately, we may face a situation where supply of electricity cannot meet demand. There must be more focus on upgrading grid infrastructure in places with over-concentration of data centres.
With Malaysia ramping up its data centre space, there needs to be a more holistic approach to handling the power and water situation in the country. In the case of electricity, an observer says that nuclear energy will be "unavoidable" for Malaysia, even without data centres. Nuclear power is the way to go if we want to produce clean energy at large scale. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in one of his recent speeches, has said that the government supports exploring new technologies, including nuclear.

The TPA is expected to be implemented in September and will allow renewable-energy (RE) producers to use the national electricity grid to deliver their green energy to customers in the country. RHB Research said TNB still own the infrastructure and will charge the independent power producers a fee for using its grid infrastructure.
