Christine: One more point. It is not a bad thing to take a risk sometimes because you don't know what you will miss if you don't take the risk. Buying some tech stocks that you recommended the other day was a good suggestion. The technology sector will also be in good demand because the tech companies can help other companies to be more efficient in the years ahead. For a market to drop, mild drop is 5 %, medium drop is 10~15%, and really big drop like 2009 is around 25%. The drop will happen but you don't have to panic if you are prepared. If you can withstand a 25% drop, then there is nothing to worry about. Such low interest rate and high liquidity--- there will not be a bank run at all for the next 5 years. Wait for market to drop and buy bank shares and right now should look at tech companies. Don't buy consumers or trading stocks or even utility stocks because upside is not that high anymore. There won't be any danger in the CPO industry because the governement is their protector. In fact, their land value should gain substantially over the years when inflation stays this high. Land value will continue to go up when money value continue to go down in next few years. The poor economic situations around the world will keep interest rate very low for the next 5 years at least even if there are going to be some raises by central banks. There will still be low interest rate for a while. The normal market interest rate for healthy US economy is 5% but the US now only around 2.36 %. To go from 2.36% to 5% is a 100% increase, this kind of increase will take more than 5 years and even if it happens it is the healthy level. The drop is good if you have cash, buy banking stocks. There is no need for CIMB to close down branches or fire people because they want to have a lot of locations to attract business. I understand that their business, rhb and CIMB overlab, but it doesn't mean that they have to throw away existing customers by closing down branches because their business overlap. don't worry so much because now the situation is already very bad compare to last year.

Christine: I still think that I hope I can contact you by email (kianlim2004@yahoo.com) to share investing views that I have occasionally. I don't like to make my investing views so much in public (it is not a good thing anyway). I believe from the bottom of my heart today that it would be definitely beneficial for you and me in the long run to be partners that share investing views in more private circumstances (investing ideas are rare and should be better kept private). You are very very good, you already know that, we must prepare for the worst in case it happens. It is my opinion that (the stock market downfall will surely happen but may not be very serious) but it will recover close to the next election a few years later. This is because people or companies change their behaviors only through after experiencing some pain. The better companies will still be around but the bad (or smaller) companies will be destroyed. The government is right now not that interested in propping up the market and I do agree with the cautions you wrote on this email. tq (you are a very good partner for investing because you are smart and hardworking).

What you tell people is you don't know what to say because you have no human intelligent. I wonder whether you brain is made up of only money that there is nothing else to show that you are a human being. The shell gobal is making 5.3 billion in US$ in three months but the refinery in Malaysia is making huge losses for the past 2 years. Don't you think there is something fishy about this? I believe you are the kind of person who read or don't read the newspaper also is the same. You are only interested in litte money and you don't even care what life is about, pity you. Shell's adjusted net profit in the third quarter hit $5.8 billion, up 31 percent on the same period a year ago, with the company maintaining its dividend as both upstream and downstream divisions delivered strong results.

Christine: I have a few questions you don't mind.
(1) Do you think the operating cost of Affin is high because it bought the Sarawak Brokerage Kenanga at a high price? Profit drops now because they issue new shares for the purchase? The army counter mostly pays dividends, share price don't move that
much, is this true?
(2) Same as CIMB which bought foreign assets but the values have not realized yet. Do you think the values will materialize in near future? At least I think Thailand may do well after 2 years of stability.
(3) The government is selling a lot of bonds at a fixed interest rate now which is go or bad for the government right now? What if future interest rate become higher in the future, old bonds still pays the same old interest rate, do you think this is good for government or not?
(4) If bank negara raises base-interest rate in the future, bank also raise their own rates. Do you think previous loans made by the banks are going to benefit because new rates will be higher than old rate?
(5) Do you think we are going to have a currency crisis or depreciation of rm in the future? What are the good and bad effects from this crisis?

All agreements are reached differently. For any kind of merger (between who and who also different), there are terms and conditions stipulated by the companies when they reach an agreement. You should read their guidelines carefully to get to know the questions you are asking.

Christine Lee, have you heard of the saying that "everyone is equal"? When you think that others are confusing you, you are in fact confusing other people, by thinking that the world revolves around only one person. Buddha consists of theory, which is enlightenment or knowledge, and the practical part is telling people to gain an understanding of what you want to do first before you do anything. Before you trade any stocks, I suggest that you learn how to appreciate other peoples' existence and also get to know what is the market trend going to be in the future. Investment is for the future gain. This is common sense. Everybody has a chance to write on this forum and express their care and concern for themselves and others. You are confusing me already? Why should you be criticizing everybody isn't it funny. You must be the person who thinks that you are the only one taking the subway in KL alone everyday! Buy low and sell high, may not be your principle, all I want to indicate was that CIMB is much cheaper and more affordable to buy that is all. Just like DBS, which has the backup of its government, CIMB is armed with Khazanah and EPF. There are black's because they are also white's, they are people and they are also banks whether they are in Singapore or in Malaysia. Who told you Singapore ass is better looking? Do you want to tell me why you think this way?

Banks are going to be very important in the future years. That is why banks are good investment now. Are we all not feeling the pinch now? It is going to get worst, our dollar value will decrease over time and we have high inflation. WE NEED MORE MONEY IN THE NEAR FUTURE JUST LIKE EVERYONE AND EVERY BUSINESSES BECAUSE OF THIS RISING COST AND SHIRNKING DOLLAR VALUE. Banks are going to do better that what it is now in the future years.
If you are smart investors and not those with a lot of cash, buying banking shares is good now. For example, Singapore DBS is selling at S$18.43 per share or RM46 per share right now. See, our banking shares are so cheap compare to the singapore ones! This is my opinion.

First of all, let us get one thing straight, this company is a refinery in Port Dickson only. It doesn't involve shell global and shell gas stations in Malaysia. If you check the annual report, you will realize that they owe the mother company shell global a big loan. If you check shell global, they are the most profitable petroleum company in the world based on recent 2014 results. Can you see? The shell global is making a hefty lots of billions, while shell the refinery is suffering multiple years of losses. Even if there is dividends, they merely pays out around 20 cent less 25% tax per year, which is 15 cents. A RM$5 to RM$6 company only pays out such poor dividend rate. I bought shares in this company because EPF and PNB held shares in this company. I trusted the judgment of the fund managers. But after that I discover myself based on the annual report and tv news that this company is just making use of the shareholders in Malaysia, that is all, and that is my opinion.

This is just my suspicion: I believe cimb share price drop to around RM6.28 is because this will be the price of cimb after the conversion of rhb and cimb shares to the new entity. see RM6.28*1.38=RM8.67. Even if you get the new shares of 1.38 times more, you still can not sell at a profit. They are deliberately keeping the CIMB share price low now for the sake of the merger. If you don't sell before the voting for rhb shareholders, you will be trapped!

vinvin, you heard of the boat story that God sent to a person 3 times and the person turned down. The moral of the story is God help people using indirect way. Likewise, making money is the objective and it has to be obtain through indirect way if you believe that God rules everything down here: We must always start from B if you want to go to A. What is B? B is a list of things: company fundamentals, market conditions, management, and etc. In fact, the B right now is we have a "flat" market", "weak consumer sentiment", high inflation, and high cost of living. Money is the best alternative to solve all the problems I listed as B. The best investment judging from B is Banking or financial services because there will be growing demand for money. CIMB or Maybank are your best investments for future years. CIMB P/E ratio is around 11. As for the merger, I believe you should just leave it alone and keep your mind clear. Go shopping or what. I prefer the merger to go through because I also hold quite a number of shares.

vinvin, put yourself in the shoe of rhb minority shareholders. They have two roads to choose, whether the RM8.50 or RM10.05 (or the 1.38). What would you be doing if you have the chance to vote. Your choice will be very similar to the minority shareholders. Furthermore, the price of rhb will not always be RM8.50 or more for rhb standing alone.

Actually, I hope CIMB price goes down to RM5 per share so that I can sell all my shares and buy only CIMB shares because you are going to win either way whether the merger goes through or not. At RM6 is a good buy, RM5.50 better buy, RM5 super buy. The book value of CIMB is 4.05 right now after the merger will be around 5.15, either way, CIMB share holders are not going to lose.

They don't need to do that, that is scare tactics. Abbars holds (21%), OSK(10%), and Minority (27%). They either get Abbars consent or they can get the minority to consent. See, they have 50% success already. If you see the price of CIMB drops, the success rate is higher. Go down first go up higher later. The reverse will happen if the deal did not go through for rhb and mbsb shareholders. get it.

In my opinion, selling is the wrong thing to do. They are not issuing extra CIMB shares to exisiting shareholders who will not have dilution problem. But this bank is acquiring another bank by issuing shares to them by sticking to a ratio of 1.38. The rhb shareholders get new shares is only fair to them. Furthermore rhb is a good bank too. If CIMB merge with RHB, its market strength is going to increase, to what extend you know later on. If Maybank is selling at RM9 something, why can't CIMB selling at higher price than that in the future. Take for example: 1+4/2=2.5. If your share price is 1, the lower end, then you are supposed to be the one benefiting and you are selling. Isn't this what you want to do?

I love my government, I know they do things with several considerations mostly for long term. CIMB will be a better bank through the merger because the merger enhances the banks' prowess. This nation needs to become competitive because there are very few countries that are not so competitive these days. Even China is no more a sleeping beauty anymore. The merger although painful is essential to strengthen our financial instititions by reducing the amounts of banks in this country. You can think of it this way: If there are fewer banks the services will be better and few banks are easier to monitor for reckless lending. Too many banks in this country or any country (even the US) have crippled the economy from time to time. I support the Government where I live and came from. This is the least we can do.

Yah right, Parkson vs Aeon, you see what happen 5 years from now. The company basically just pay rentals and collect rentals from small retailers who set up counters inside their premises. This is the major thing they do. They listed their shares in several places, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and where else, because they are the strong Brand Name at that time. But times have changed. They have very few fixed assets and but high cash position because of the listings before. But time have changed, they can't just rely on their "Brand" anymore. This is a company functioning like a bond investment with higher risk. Even reit is safer because at least those issuing companies still hold fixed assets. What about Parkson? Very low fixed assets ratio!

So, they raise this question now so the problem will not be raised later on. We should know their real intention, they don't want to vote, that is why they ask you whether they need to vote or not. If they want to vote, they really don't have to say anything. We have law in Malaysia I am sure EPF knows that law better than you or me. vinvin, what can you do (when mkt) is saturating. Here is my suggestion: The outside market is not going to change but you can change the inside (yourself) and how? Use the "one solution can solve two problems" method which means you can do two things: (1) Rotation and (2) Change position. This is what the earth counter the sun and moon. Both the sun (outside problem) and moon (inside or nearer problem). To apply to shares: (1) Focus on total value of your shareholdings (as the focus that you want to increase by 5~10%) every year. Don't care about how well you are doing on individual counters one by one. (2) Keep the strong companies (those I listed as (1)) in last time I wrote. Use your weak or bad shares and switch them to shares that are better than your weaker shares. This you have to wait. You are switching your problem to another problem (some good companies that run into problems) to solve your own problem. This is what I mean by one solution can solve two problems. Wait for the companies you like to run into share price problems and switch your bad shares into these companies. think about it first. this is how you can help yourself to counter that deadlock (or saturating situation).

vinvin, the market is at saturation level that is why it is going up and down in order to stay around at this saturation level. At saturation level because the outside market is poor an improving very slowly or going in the opposite direction slowly. During saturation, the future market price will depend on future good or bad news on individual companies. A lot of companies may fall back from saturation level and of course plunge their share prices if they don't do two things: Only those companies that do two things can break out from the saturation level and move up: (1) Increase its size (consolidate) or make itself healthier (raise money) and (2) Change itself so that it can be more useful to others. Look for company that has small problem and reorganize their businesses, these are the companies that can break out from saturation level later on. The market conditions is going to change slowly from good to bad. Look for those companies that are willing to make changes themselves especially those with previous small problems and share prices have taken a bitting. This group of companies will break out and not everyone will. hope you understand.
