One can manufacture profits with creative accounting and dubious accounting standards. I've invested in some companies that have massive reserves accumulated over years of profitability. Shareholders however suffer with share price stunted and microscopic dividends.
Dividends is proof of real and not just paper profits.
Generous dividends is proof of real and large profits!

Magic show taking place in the market now - it's called levitation

In the past, the final dividend hovered around 40-45 sen.

They've rightfully raised dividends in line with inflation and I belief wised up to the idea that this Co has the capacity to pay handsome dividends to compensate for the shortfall in market price due to lack of trading liquidity. Co being cash rich is good for shareholders but better if the shareholders themselves are cash rich. No strain on the cash flow or reserves to BK in appeasing shareholders but massive goodwill is generated. I hope other cash & reserve-rich companies like Petron can draw lessons from BK.

I like it very much when management buys back shares - less dividends to pay, better ROE and EPS.

My take ... Crack spread certainly has a bearing on the fortunes of Petron, given that it has a refiner.

The spread plunged considerably in early July and was in negative territory albeit only for fleeting moments. However that is a one-size-fits-all generic curve.

Specifically for Petron, it appeared worst to have generated a negative gross profit.

Performance is down with continued losses. However the Public Relations is very good to dress up the losses to look like profit. Cerita banyak goreng saja.

I have to correct your statement, BK does have foreign loans , such as USD, GBP, AUD, JPY, EURO. and RMB.

Noted I stand corrected tq. However note 35 of the Ann Rpt only mentioned rather vaguely sketchily ... "The aggregate outstanding nominal value of the Ringgit Sukuk and Non-Ringgit Sukuk issued under the 2nd Programme shall not exceed RM1.6 billion (or its equivalent in foreign currencies)."

Fellow investors, don't you think that whilst rise in interest rates may be bad in terms of fair value, the new cash flows form coupons, dividends & premiums will be able to invest at higher yields?

So rise in interest rates is a boon to the insurance companies.

This counter is toxic waste in my portfolio. The bottom seems bottomless.

Short sellers (4.58m) exacerbated the fall. Picked up some not at the lowest price. Despite that I'll be waiting when they decide to square their position.

A big chunk of retail profit will be attributed to the evil twin sisters, Petron Fuel International & Petron Oil. How much? God only knows.

Sslee - I read your proposed questions for the AGM and they're quite pointed. Some of the questions I had asked in the past myself like which petrol stations belonged to Petron & which to the evil twin sister but did not get a clear response. They should rightfully disclose such info in the annual report.
My concern and many in this chat is the 230m derivative losses.

We're aware that there are 2 companies sitting side-by-side. One is 100% owned whilst the other is about 70%++ owned, making the latter something of a step child. When derivative trades are done, it's quite easy I think to park the deals in one company or the other based solely on personal discretion and that is a serious concern.

That was not a share buyback. More like a pre arranged DBT done at only one price.

Think about this ... The share price shot up in anticipation of a favourable quarterly results against the backdrop of better crack spreads & inventory gains etc. Then the price started a steep downfall to something reflective of the results even before the results were announced.

There's a term for such a phenomenon.

I wonder how the 100%-owned sister company had performed. I hope the external auditors are alert to any possible tricks to try to park profits with it and losses with the listed entity.

Compared to corresponding quarter, revenue increased 90% but EPS only by a paltry 3.4%. The 230m derivative loss is massive although I believe a big chunk is unrealised. Did a rogue trader contribute to this calamity?

Despite the leaping oil prices and the so-called improving crack spreads, the results are disappointing. Looks like the management lacked the caliber and could not seize the moment and make some windfall profits. The massive derivative loss implies that the traders seriously failed at almost every hand in the game trying to out guess the crude price trajectory. They were not mediocre but below mediocre.

On that conviction I managed to buy, break out in cold sweat and sell - all within 1 trading day, pocketing something more than pocket change!

Despite the tiny dividend, the Co in all fairness has made up with this massive 100k share buyback.

Johnzhang - i think and mainly HOPE that your point is valid - dump the shares to force margin players without deep pockets to sell, further aggravating the downward pressure so that the profiteers may pick the shares up for a song.

I hope I got that right.
