In our view, a key takeaway from the briefing was where management thinks a comfortable CET-1 ratio should be, given factors such as regulator expectations and peer CET-1 levels. For now, that level is 14.5%. We believe investors now have better visibility on excess capital payouts. If CIMB can contain its full-year risk-weighted assets or RWA expansion to low-single digit, all else equal, another 7 sen special DPS in 4Q24 is possible.
We raise our TP to MYR8.90 on a higher GGM-derived P/BV of 1.22x – in line with its long term mean. Our TP includes an unchanged 6% ESG premium.

We updated the beta and lowered our market risk premium from 6% to 5.5% for the banking sector on the back of the improving economic environment in Malaysia, the banking system’s healthy asset quality and capital ratios, stable interest rate environment and more positive investor sentiments. With that, we raise CIMB’s TP from RM8.14 to RM9.48. Our valuation is based on an implied PBV of c. 1.32x based on the Gordon Growth Model and a 3% ESG premium. Buy maintained on CIMB.

KUALA LUMPUR: CIMB Group Holdings Bhd has close to RM5 billion worth of deals in the pipeline for data centres.
Group chief executive officer Novan Amirudin said a lot of conversations that take place, including those with foreign investors today, revolve around data centres and the right ways to structure the deals.
"In the pipeline, we have close to RM5 billion in total, in terms of the number of deals (on data centres) that we are discussing.
"The ones we have mobilised which include signing, is about half a billion," he told reporters in a media briefing for the group's financial results in the second quarter of 2024.

(Aug 31): Global investors are boosting exposure to Indonesia and Malaysia on bets the two markets will benefit more than their developing-nation peers as the US Federal Reserve (Fed) looks set to embark on monetary easing.
Exchange-rate watchers see likely further weakness in the greenback giving emerging-market currencies more wind in their sails. With foreign currency holdings at banks in Malaysia and Indonesia near a record according to data compiled by Bloomberg, more support is seen coming when exporters convert their dollars into local currencies.
Southeast Asia is “undervalued, under-invested and under-researched, which means a lot of alpha”, said John Foo, the founder of Valverde Investment Partners Pte Ltd. It’s “at a new beginning as global allocators position back in the region”, he added.

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 30): CIMB Group Holdings Bhd (KL:CIMB) says it is optimistic about the growth of its non-interest income amid the flow of funds into emerging Asian markets prompted by the imminent global interest rate cuts.
Currently, the non-interest income to total income ratio of the bank stands at 31.9%.
“We're seeing increased foreign flows into our capital markets," said CIMB's newly appointed chief executive officer Novan Amirudin on Friday. "And I'm proud to say that we have been at the forefront in terms of facilitating some of these flows into our country.”

According to the firm, Maybank, RHB Bank, AmBank, and Public Bank exceeded expectations.
"Following our recent upgrade of bank earnings across the board, there could be upside potential to our KLCI earnings forecasts," it said in a research note today.
CIMB Securities maintained the end-2024 KLCI target of 1,728 points, based on a target price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) of 16 times, which is one standard deviation above its five-year mean P/E.
"We will be reviewing our KLCI valuation model post-results season to reflect the higher bank earnings, which will likely be positive for overall earnings growth," it said.

(Aug 26): Investors should pare their Chinese equity holdings and put their money in Indonesia and Malaysia, according to analysts at Nomura Holdings Inc.
They upgraded Malaysian and Indonesian stocks to 'overweight' from 'neutral', partly on their view that the two markets will benefit more from cuts to US interest rates, according to a note by strategists including Chetan Seth. The analysts cut their recommendations on MSCI China to 'neutral' from 'overweight'.
Investors have reason to take Nomura’s pick seriously. The bank’s strategists upgraded Taiwanese equities in December, and the benchmark Taiex Index is up around 25% this year. The wider MSCI Asia Pacific Index is up about 9.8% over the same period, while MSCI China has gained by 2.7%

Last year was on last day but last Q was on 24th May. For MBB it can be early or last day, unlike CIMB it's always on last day evening.
MBB is always at mid day break.

"The long wait is over," said Ryan Detrick, chief market strategist at Carson Group in Omaha, Nebraska. "This was the dovish shift that market participants have been waiting for."
"The Fed is clearly turning to the dovish camp and Powell has made it crystal clear that September will be the start of multiple rate cuts coming the remainder of this year,"
"Financials are at an all-time high, with a huge surge from regional banks,"
Markets are betting the Fed's policy rate will be in the 3.00%-3.25% range by the end of 2025, more than two percentage points below where it is now.

Fed Chair Powell indicates interest rate cuts ahead: ‘The time has come for policy to adjust’
2 months ago | Report Abuse
Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell laid the groundwork Friday for interest rate cuts ahead, though he declined to provide exact indications on timing or extent.
“The time has come for policy to adjust,” the central bank leader said in his much-awaited keynote address at the Fed’s annual retreat in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. “The direction of travel is clear, and the timing and pace of rate cuts will depend on incoming data, the evolving outlook, and the balance of risks.”
However, he did note the progress on inflation and said the Fed can now turn its focus equally to other side of its dual mandate, namely to make sure the economy stays around full employment.
“Inflation has declined significantly. The labor market is no longer overheated, and conditions are now less tight than those that prevailed before the pandemic,” Powell said. “Supply constraints have normalized. And the balance of the risks to our two mandates has changed.”
