The bank’s contrarian stock gauge fell 33 bps in December
BofA says negative sentiment will help S&P 500 reach 4,000
As the stock-market rout shows no end in sight, an equity indicator constructed by Bank of America Corp. offers a glimmer of hope.

The bank’s so-called sell-side indicator, which aggregates Wall Street strategists’ asset allocation views, fell 33 basis points in December and is now 1.5 percentage points away from the level that’s historically tied to a good buying opportunity. At the current level, the indicator is closest its been to signaling a ‘buy’ since 2017.

“One reason we are more constructive on equities in 2023 is the big drop in sentiment during 2022,” Bank of America’s strategists including Savita Subramanian wrote in note to clients. “It has been a bullish signal when Wall Street strategists were extremely bearish, and vice versa.”

If sentiment is prone for an eventual turnaround, it didn’t show on Tuesday. After declining 19% in 2022, the S&P 500 Index fell 0.4% on the first trading day of 2023 as investors continued to assess the outlook on growth stocks. Tesla Inc. dropped the most since 2020 after fourth-quarter deliveries missed estimates, despite the electric-carmaker offering incentives in important markets. And Apple Inc. shares also slipped pushing the iPhone maker’s market value below $2 trillion.

Whether the rebound will happen this time is anyone’s guess, with a lot likely contingent on the Federal Reserve’s path of interest-rate hikes. To Bank of America’s strategists, negative sentiment should help the S&P 500 reach 4,000 by the end of the year, a level that implies a 4.6% jump from its close on Tuesday.

Sentiment indicators have been questionable investment tools in 2022, with readings historically associated with rebounds preceding even bigger declines. But as the rout keeps progressing, valuations on the S&P 500 are becoming more reasonable, strengthening the case for investors with cash to jump in. The 500-member index is trading at 16.6 times its projected 12-month profits, in line with its average reading this century.

If only someone did not overpaid high crude premium that resulted in average USD 136.45 per barrel in Q3 (HRC is welcome to correct my calculation) when average Dated Brent dropped to USD 101 per barrel in Q3

many plausible explanation, its a forward contract , a futures contract, its how prices get reflected in purchase account, its the accounting cycle, its the delivery and production cycle, ............... the management has many plausible explanations.

At the end of the AGM all u get is a free drink and non the wiser.

For the 9 months period, the company has a pre tax profits of $ 88 million, and EPS of 25 sen..not too shabby for this company.

Cathie Wood's flagship Ark Innovation ETF dropped 67% last year, and is down 80% from its February 2021 peak.

Celebrity money manager Cathie Wood of Ark Investment Management, bought shares of her favorite young technology stocks last year as they slid.


Ark’s chief executive has been a particularly big buyer of electric vehicle titan Tesla (TSLA) - Get Free Report since October.

It has suffered from production problems, and there is concern that sales growth will slow. Investors also are worried that Chief Executive Elon Musk is preoccupied with his newly-bought Twitter. Tesla shares plunged 65% in 2022.

Wood pounced on them Dec. 30, with Ark Innovation ETF (ARKK) - Get Free Report purchasing 221,748 shares, worth $27.3 million as of the Dec. 30 close. Tesla is the No. 3 holding in Ark Innovation, Wood’s flagship fund, behind No. 1 Zoom Video Communications and Exact Sciences.

Wood’s Returns Disappoint
Meanwhile, Wood’s investment performance underwhelmed last year, as tech stocks fell. Ark Innovation ETF plummeted 67%, and is down 80% from its February 2021 peak.

Wood has defended herself by noting that she has a five-year investment horizon. But the five-year annualized return of Ark Innovation was negative 2.9% through Dec. 30, a far cry from the S&P 500’s positive return of 9.42%.

Powell tied pessimism on outlook for prices to labor strength
Record of December Fed meeting due out Wednesday in Washington
The Federal Reserve is set to shed more light on why it’s worried that strong inflation may linger as the US economy moves into the new year.

At the conclusion of the Dec. 13-14 meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee, policymakers published new projections showing they expected inflation would end 2023 higher than they previously thought. That led to surprisingly widespread support in the projections for the notion that interest rates would need to rise above 5% in 2023.

The Fed will publish minutes of the meeting on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Washington.
