Macy's, Lululemon drop on holiday-quarter warnings
* Indexes: Dow down 0.3%, S&P 500 down 0.1%, Nasdaq up 0.6%
NEW YORK, Jan 9 (Reuters) - The S&P 500 index erased early gains to close nearly flat on Monday as expectations that the Federal Reserve will become less aggressive with its interest rate hikes were offset by lingering worries about inflation.
The Dow ended lower, and the Nasdaq Composite ended well off the day's highs.
Investors are awaiting comments Tuesday from Fed Chair Jerome Powell, who some strategists expect could say more time is needed to show inflation is under control.
Money market bets were showing 77% odds of a 25-basis point hike in the Fed's February policy meeting.
A consumer prices report due Thursday could be key for rate expectations, said Quincy Krosby, chief global strategist, LPL Financial in Charlotte, North Carolina. "The CPI report this week is going to be essential for fine-tuning the Fed funds futures market."
Investors also may have sold some shares after recent strong market gains, said Paul Nolte, portfolio manager at Kingsview Investment Management in Chicago. "You're seeing a little bit of profit-taking ahead of the CPI number due out this week."
The technology sector gained as Treasury yields fell. Consumer discretionary stocks also rose, with Amazon.com Inc up 1.5% after Jefferies said it saw cost pressures easing for the e-commerce giant in the second half of the year.
Also, S&P 500 companies are about to kick off the fourth-quarter earnings period, with results from top U.S. banks expected later this week.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 112.96 points, or 0.34%, to 33,517.65, the S&P 500 lost 2.99 points, or 0.08%, to 3,892.09 and the Nasdaq Composite added 66.36 points, or 0.63%, to 10,635.65.
Shares of Broadcom Inc fell in late trading to end down 2% after Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter, reported that Apple Inc plans to drop a Broadcom chip in 2025 and use an in-house design instead.
Friday's jobs report, which showed a moderation in wage increases, lifted hopes that the Fed might become less aggressive in its rate-hike push to reduce inflation.
Tesla Inc shares rose 5.9% after the electric-vehicle maker indicated longer waiting times for some versions of the Model Y in China, signaling the recent price cuts could be stoking demand.
Macy's Inc fell 7.7% and Lululemon Athletica Inc dropped 9.3% after both retailers issued disappointing holiday-quarter forecasts.
Volume on U.S. exchanges was 11.35 billion shares, compared with the 10.90 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.
Advancing issues outnumbered decliners on the NYSE by a 1.85-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 1.48-to-1 ratio favored advancers.
The S&P 500 posted 13 new 52-week highs and two new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 129 new highs and 32 new lows.
Chillaga Fed Powell mau buka mulut again later tonite at 22hrs. Dunno market will be affected again kah. Better wait first see his mulut ada bau busuk again or not. Haiyoh. Correct?
In separate events, Bostic and Daly vow to curb inflation Fed to decide whether to slow pace of increases again Two Federal Reserve officials said Monday that the central bank will likely need to raise interest rates above 5% before pausing and holding for some time.
“We are just going to have to hold our resolve,” Raphael Bostic, president of the Atlanta Fed, told the Atlanta Rotary Club. He said the Fed was committed to tackling high inflation and this warrants raising interest rates into a 5% to 5.25% range to squeeze excess demand out of the economy.
We are just going to have to hold our resolve,” Raphael Bostic, president of the Atlanta Fed, told the Atlanta Rotary Club. He said the Fed was committed to tackling high inflation and this warrants raising interest rates into a 5% to 5.25% range to squeeze excess demand out of the economy.
He later told reporters that the case for reducing the size of the Fed’s rate hikes to 25 basis points would be boosted if data due Thursday showed consumer prices cooling, following evidence that wage gains have also slowed.
San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly, speaking in a live-streamed interview with the Wall Street Journal, also said she expects the central bank to raise interest rates to somewhere above 5%, though the ultimate level is unclear and will depend on incoming data on inflation.
Neither Bostic nor Daly has a vote on policy this year.
Policymakers meet at the end of the month and are expected to either raise rates by 50 basis points for a second straight time or slow down to a quarter-point hike.
“Doing it in more gradual steps does give you the ability to respond to incoming information,” Daly said. She stressed that it’s too early to “declare victory” over persistent inflation.

Hong Kong banks will raise their lending rates further in 2023 as Fed seeks to tame runaway US inflation, analysts say All 10 economists polled by the Post predicted the prime rate will rise in 2023 by up to 1 percentage point If their forecasts are right, the prime rate could hit 6.875 per cent per annum, a level last seen in late 2007
Hong Kong borrowers will need to dig deeper to pay off their mortgages and other loans as commercial banks are set to increase their interest rates further in 2023, according to a poll of 10 economists by the Post. All 10 predicted the banks’ prime rates will continue to climb this year, with three forecasting a rise of at least 25 basis points in the first half. Five expect the rise to be between 37.5 and 50 basis points, and the other two believe they will go up by a full percentage point. “The US inflation rate remains so high that the Fed will need to increase its rate by one full point in 2023, and Hong Kong banks will follow suit and increase their prime rate by 100 basis points,” said Bruce Yam, an independent currency-market analyst. If their predictions are right, the prime rate will go up to between 6 per cent and 6.875 per cent per annum, a level last seen in late 2007 before the global financial crisis.
Hong Kong banks have to increase the prime rate in 2023 as the interbank rate – known as Hibor – now stands at the highest level in 15 years, according to Samuel Tse, an economist and strategist at DBS Hong Kong. One-month Hibor that is used to price Hibor-linked mortgage loans stood at 4.35 per cent on December 31, while three-month Hibor that determines corporate loans reached 4.99 per cent.
The Hibor is likely to stay at a high level, of about 5 per cent, in the first half of 2023, and the prime rate is likely to go up to about 6 per cent,” said Yam. Other economists expect the Fed will increase its key rate by between 50 and 75 basis points in the first half of this year to tame inflation that is likely to stay at about 7 per cent, way above its target of 2 per cent. The Fed raised the key rate by 4.25 percentage points in 2022, almost double the 2.25-percentage-point increase during the last rate-hike cycle from 2015 to 2018. The current Fed rate is between 4.25 per cent and 4.5 per cent, and analysts expects it may go up to 5.5 per cent.
The US Fed is determined to slow inflation at the cost of economic growth. Hence it is likely to do two more rate hikes of 25 basis points each,” said Tommy Ong, managing director of T.O. & Associates Consultancy. “The increase in financing costs negatively impacts Hong Kong’s small and medium enterprises’ sustainability, but to a lesser extent for the big companies. “The stock market has already felt the pain in 2022 of the rate hikes. The negative impact of further rate hikes is fading for equities.”
A rising prime rate will affect the property market as borrowers face higher monthly repayments, said Eric Tso Tak-ming, chief vice-president of local mortgage broker mReferral, who forecast the Fed rate will increase to 5.5 per cent and Hong Kong’s prime rate to 6.5 per cent.
“High interest rates may lead to many companies or individuals defaulting on their debt payments. This may trigger a debt crisis and force the Fed to turn around its interest rate policy,” Yam said.
