KUALA LUMPUR: The benchmark FBM KLCI Index's rebound on the first trading day of the second half of 2023 (2H23) has market players floating hope for a better second half as major economies such as the United States and China show signs of improvement.

Yesterday, the benchmark index closed 19.21 points or 1.4 per cent higher at 1,395.89 points. A 6.6 per cent drop year-to-date.

Market experts said factors such as stabilising of China's inflation and the upcoming state election could push the local index to end the year on a higher note.

The FBMKLCI index could potentially reach 1460 to 1480 levels, 100 points lower than previously predicted (1500) due to China's early reopening, they said.

SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes said there is a possibility that the United States Federal Reserve (Fed) is slowing down its rate hikes.

"There is a growing sense that we are nearing the end of the vicious for risk sentiment aggressive Fed rate hike cycle with inflation meandering down the mountain. "And locally while China's manufacturing fell suggesting activity remains sluggish, it is starting to show signs of stabilising which is particularly good news for Malaysia as China is the key trading partner," he told the New Straits Times.

Innes noted there is also some early portfolio balancing in the second half as investors are looking at "undervalued pockets" with lower valuations.

"What I mean by undervalued pockets includes manufacturers, particularly the big electrical and electronic equipment, and we could see a boost in commodity exporters."

"I have not heard of any change in strategy by the Employees Provident Fund to invest more locally, but that is something we do expect to happen especially if China's economy starts turning the corner again," Innes added.

Malacca Securities head of research Loui Low said the market bellwether might be weak now and trade below the 1,400 levels.

"Based on the current sentiment and nearer to the state elections, it might be slightly weak for now below the 1,400. "We think the better sentiment may come in after the conclusion of the state elections," he added.

UMA for picorp? :)

KUALA LUMPUR: Farm Fresh Bhd has received an unusual market activity (UMA) query from Bursa Malaysia after its shares hit an all-time low yesterday.

At 5pm, the stock lost 4.2 per cent or five sen to RM1.14.

Farm Fresh said rumours had been circulating on the company, triggered by the recent announcement by Australia's Bega Group on the decline in Australian milk production.

Bega Group was expecting a decline in performance with a potential non-cash impairment in the range of A$180 million to A$280 million in its audited results (subject to finalisation).

"While Farm Fresh Bhd is also impacted by the less than expected decrease in farmgate milk prices in Australia as we do purchase milk from third party farmers in Australia, we are much less impacted compared to Bega Group.

"Bega Group exclusively purchases 100 per cent of its milk requirements from farmers in Australia while our purchase of milk ingredients from third party farmers in Australia is expected to account for approximately 14 per cent of our total milk ingredients.

"This is equivalent to more than 100 million litres in the financial year ended March 31, 2024," it said in a statement.

Additionally, Farm Fresh said 70 per cent of the raw milk used by it comes from its own farms in both Malaysia and Australia.

"We continue to take into account various factors in determining our investments in our upstream, midstream and downstream operations, the input costs and variations that occur from time to time.

"This will ensure we do not depend heavily on any specific milk ingredients source," it added.

KUALA LUMPUR: Farm Fresh Bhd has responded to an unusual market activity (UMA) query from Bursa Malaysia prompted by steep declines in its share price since May 30.

The company's share price has shed some 26 per cent of its value since May 30.

It closed at an all time low of RM1.14, well below its reference price of RM1.35, Tuesday.

KUALA LUMPUR: Farm Fresh Bhd has clarified that the recent announcement it made regarding the unusual trading activity of its shares was voluntary and not in response to any query from Bursa Malaysia.

"The company wishes to clarify that the announcement made by the company yesterday was voluntary to provide clarity to the public in relation to the market price volatility and trading volume of the Farm Fresh shares in Bursa Malaysia," it said in a bourse filing.

On July 4, 2023, the trading stock in Farm Fresh had plunged to an all-time trading low of 99 sen a share before ending the session at RM1.14 on record trading volume of 77.38 million shares.

In response to the development, Farm Fresh filed an announcement with Bursa Malaysia over rumours about the company that had been circulating.

It sought to clarify that while Australian dairy giant Bega Group had projected a decrease in performance resulting from the decline in Australian milk production, Farm Fresh was "much less impacted".

“While Farm Fresh is also impacted by the less-than-expected decrease in farmgate milk prices in Australia, as we do purchase milk from third party farmers in Australia, we are much less impacted compared to Bega Group.

“Bega Group exclusively purchases 100% of its milk requirements from farmers in Australia whilst our purchase of milk ingredients from third party farmers in Australia is expected to account for approximately 14% of our total milk ingredients," it said in the July 4 filing.

At the lunch break, shares in Farm Fresh were trading three sen or 2.63% lower at RM1.11 a share on the back of 12.85 million shares exchanging hands.

"Meskipun pembukaan semula China terus menyokong ekonomi global, kadar

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia will likely trade better with bargain-hunting activities to take the stage next week amid the cautious mode as investors closely monitor the upcoming US inflation data, speeches from numerous US Federal Reserve (Fed) officials and earnings announcements by US banks.

Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said that although sentiment was cautious, there would be bargain-hunting activities because valuations of the FBM KLCI were really cheap, and, hence, the expectation of the benchmark index to trend higher.

"For next week, we expect bargain-hunting will prevail given the cheap valuations of the benchmark index, which is trading at 13 times as compared to its five-year average of 17 times.

"Furthermore, buying support from local institutions had been rather apparent. Hence, we reckon the index to show a more positive performance and expect it to hover between the 1,375-1,395 range next week with immediate resistance at 1,400 while support at 1,373," he told Bernama.

Next week, investors would likely monitor the China consumer price index (CPI) and speeches by Fed officials, namely San Francisco Fed president Mary Daly, Cleveland Fed president Loretta Mester, and Atlanta Fed president Raphael Bostic on July 10, while St Louis Fed president James Bullard would give his speech on July 11.

Besides, investors would also look into the US June CPI report on July 12, the China trade on July 13, as well as earnings announcements by US banks (SPX500_m: Bank earnings - Wells Fargo, JP Morgan and Citigroup) on July 14.

On a Friday-to-Friday basis, the FBM KLCI edged up 0.99 of a point to finish at 1,377.67 compared with 1,376.68 a week earlier.

On the index board, the FBM Emas Index increased 25.14 points to 10,166.48, the FBMT 100 Index improved 16.32 points to 9,860.32, the FBM Emas Shariah Index added 16.31 points to 10,431.18, the FBM 70 Index rose 61.11 points to 13,445.69, and the FBM ACE Index perked 71.85 points to 5,139.87.

Sector-wise, the Financial Services Index went up 44.62 points to 15,377.49, the Plantation Index surged 104.28 points to 6,802.93, the Industrial Products and Services Index advanced 1.33 points to 158.25, and the Energy Index was 18.11 points firmer to 792.20.

Weekly turnover increased to 12.19 billion units valued at RM7.66 billion from 10.63 billion units valued at RM6.44 billion in the preceding trading week.

The Main Market volume was higher at 8.52 billion shares worth RM6.43 billion compared with 7.57 billion shares worth RM5.49 billion in the previous week.

Warrants turnover widened to 1.36 billion units valued at RM225.95 million versus 868.29 million units valued at RM147.26 million last week.

The ACE Market volume strengthened to 2.25 billion shares worth RM994.16 million from 2.15 billion shares worth RM809.51 million previously.

Progressive Impact Holdings Berhad (PIHB) and its decisions. The selection of an external auditor is typically based on a company's specific requirements and considerations. However, some factors that may influence the choice of Ernst & Young (EY) or any other auditing firm could include:

Reputation and Expertise: EY is one of the "Big Four" accounting firms known for its global presence and reputation. Companies often choose well-established auditing firms for their expertise, technical knowledge, and experience in providing high-quality audit services.

Industry Knowledge: Auditing firms with industry-specific knowledge and experience may be preferred. If PIHB operates in a particular industry or sector, EY's experience and understanding of that industry may have been a deciding factor.

Compliance and Regulatory Requirements: Auditing firms must comply with relevant auditing and financial reporting standards. Selecting a reputable auditing firm like EY can help ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and maintain trust with stakeholders.

Independence and Objectivity: External auditors are expected to be independent and objective in their assessments. Choosing a reputable auditing firm can provide assurance to stakeholders that the audit process will be conducted impartially.

Global Network and Resources: If PIHB operates internationally or has subsidiaries abroad, selecting an auditing firm with a global network, like EY, can provide access to resources and expertise across different jurisdictions.

It's important to note that the specific reasons for choosing EY as the external auditor for PIHB can only be accurately determined by PIHB's management or board of directors, as they would have considered their unique circumstances, requirements, and the firm's proposal during the selection process.

Hong Kong: Asian markets rose Tuesday, with Hong Kong and Shanghai lifted by China moves to support its struggling property sector and authorities' pledged further help for the economy.

The gains extended gains in New York and Europe as traders look ahead to the release of key US inflation data this week, which could provide a fresh indication of the Federal Reserve's interest rate plans.

However, concerns remain about the upcoming earnings season owing to the high valuations, ever-tightening monetary policies and signs of a slowdown in the economy.

Hong Kong was again one of the best performers Tuesday, a day after a tech-fuelled advance that came after Beijing hit fintech firms Ant Group and Tenpay with big fines and signalled a sector crackdown was almost over.

On Monday, authorities urged banks and other financial institutions to provide easier terms for ailing developers by renegotiating the terms of their loans, with the aim of ensuring homes under construction are delivered.

And on Tuesday, state-run financial newspapers said more announcements were in the pipeline as well as measures to boost business confidence.

The moves come as the vast property industry in China strains under the weight of enormous debts, with some firms such as Evergrande on the verge of collapse.

The crisis has sent shivers through the world's number two economy, which has in turn weighed on global growth. The chairman of Australian mining titan Rio Tinto warned this week of a knock-on effect on the commodities sector.

Beijing has come under immense pressure in recent months to unveil new growth-fuelling policies following a series of below-par indicators showing the post-Covid rebound has run off the tracks.

"China's latest policy support toward the property sector was a bit surprising – given the low expectations on the property market," said Zhou Hao, of Guotai Junan International Holdings.

"The policies are intended to hedge against the strong headwinds in the market."

However, observers warn there is limited scope in the amount of stimulus officials can provide owing to huge local government debt and leaders' desire to recalibrate the growth model from a vast state investment model.

In early trade, Hong Kong and Shanghai enjoyed healthy gains, with Tokyo, Sydney, Seoul, Singapore, Taipei, Manila and Jakarta also up.

The release of US consumer and producer inflation data this week is now in focus as investors gird themselves for the Fed to resume its rate hiking drive after last month's pause.

While data has pointed to a slowdown in US jobs growth and a tempering of economic activity, most bets are for borrowing costs to go up this month and possibly at least once more before the end of the year.

Several central bank officials have lined up to warn more tightening was needed to get prices under control and inflation back to the Fed's two percent goal.

The data is followed by earnings from some of Wall Street's big beasts including JPMorgan Chase, Delta Air Lines and PepsiCo.

But observers said the reporting season could be a tough one for markets as firms are expected to provide dour forecasts in light of the higher rates environment and the near-term outlook for the global economy.

It is now or never, double or triple in price like ytl :)

KUALA LUMPUR: Market analysts believe the share price of small-cap stocks traded in Bursa Malaysia will improve once the prevailing uncertainty surrounding the state elections is resolved.

The FBM Small Cap Index has gained 1.57 per cent year-to-date and 10.84 per cent over the past 12 months.

"We expect sentiment to improve when the uncertainty surrounding the state elections is effectively resolved," said Rakuten Trade head of research Kenny Yee.

Tradeview Capital Sdn Bhd vice president Tan Cheng Wen said generally, small-cap stock performance is mainly driven by retail investors on a relative basis.

The marginal increase year-to-date (YTD) in the FBM Small Cap index tracks retail investors' net buy of RM0.46 billion YTD, he added.

Tan said ultimately, large-cap performance drives sentiment, and once this picks up, investors should see some form of revitalisation in the coming months.

As small-cap stocks are dependent on the overall market's performance, a weaker ringgit which may lead to capital outflows can be a factor that impacts overall investor sentiment. Sectors such as information technology, he said, will largely experience a tailwind as they export most of their finished goods overseas and derive revenue in US dollars.

Sectors such as consumer staples, consumer discretionary, and industrials could suffer headwinds due to a hike in input costs as a result of higher raw materials that are priced in foreign currencies.

"We view it (FBM SMall Cap Index) as cheap relative to the FBM 100 index with a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 10.32x versus 13.44x and relative to the historical 5-year average P/E of 28.99x. As such, there is potential for a further uplift in the next 12 months."

"Among the factors influencing our outlook are the upcoming state elections contributing towards political uncertainty, slower than expected recovery in China and corresponding stimulus by the Chinese government, the potential continuation of ongoing rate hikes in the US, which might cause Bank Negara Malaysia to maintain a hawkish stance," Tan added.

Malacca Securities head of research Loui Low said small-cap investors should look at building materials, construction and utility stocks once the state elections are concluded.

Low said investors should also navigate the performance fluctuations of small-cap stocks to optimise their investment decisions and look for high net cash and high dividend yield stocks.

In a report, RHB Research said market liquidity improvement in the small and mid-cap space early this year was dampened for the past few months due to lukewarm investor sentiment.

RHB Research said investors should stick to a sector rotation strategy and top-slicing and buying on dips in a range-bound market, favouring sectors in consumer staples, consumer discretionary, healthcare, solar-related names, non-semiconductor technology names, 3PL logistics, and oil and gas.

More jobs for picorp to assess the environment along the journey

KUALA LUMPUR: The multi-billion ringgit Kuala Lumpur-Singapore high speed rail (KL-Singapore HSR) project, which was terminated in January 2021, has been revived.

MyHSR Corp Sdn Bhd chairman Datuk Seri Fauzi Abdul Rahman said the government had decided that both Malaysia and Singapore would rejuvenate the project first mooted 22 years ago by YTL Group.

"The HSR is a trend. Indonesia has it. They are running at 350km per hour. The government has decided that both the countries will be involved. There are glitches here and there with Singapore but these are all normal hazards.

"There will be no cost to the government as it would be a public-private partnership," Fauzi said during a "Teh Tarik" session with the media today.

MyHSR Corp chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Nur Ismal Mohamed Kamal said the HSR is critical for the integration of economic and city planning for wider economic growth.

"By having the HSR in the northern and southern corridors, this could create opportunities and spread growth. Countries around us like Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnama have woken up to this and started to do things on their own.

"Imagine what will happen to us. Those countries will grow by leaps and bounds. If these countries become successful, who is going to come and invest here?" he asked.

There are 19 countries which have HSR in operations (56,0119 km) or under construction (31,857km), Nur Ismal said.

"Out of this 19, seven are developing countries and that is why they are embarking on this HSR project. Some have lower par capita income than Malaysia but they have a vision on how they want to move things," he added.

Closing Market Update: Stocks Rally on Tamer CPI

Tamer-than-expected inflation numbers triggered a broad rally in U.S. stocks Wednesday, with the S&P 500® Index (SPX) and Nasdaq Composite (COMP) rising to 15-month highs, as investors grew increasingly hopeful the Federal Reserve's interest rate-hiking campaign could be nearing an end.

Small-cap stocks joined the upswing, with the Russell 2000 (RUT) jumping to a five-month high after the Labor Department early Wednesday reported the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for June rose 0.2% over May. The core rate, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, was up by a similar magnitude. Analysts had expected 0.3% gains in both measures. Compared to year-earlier levels, overall CPI rose 3%, slowing from May's 4% annual rise and marking the lowest reading since March 2021.

Inflation remains above the Fed's 2% long-term target, so the market is still anticipating another quarter-point rate hike from the Fed later this month. However, hopes are growing that the Fed's rate campaign may successfully tame inflation without pushing the economy into a recession.

The June CPI report "was better than expected across the board, and it could provide another boost to the bullish inflation deceleration narrative," Schwab Center for Financial Research analysts say in a report. Futures linked to the Fed's benchmark funds rate are still pricing in one additional rate hike this year, the analysts say, "but the likelihood of a second hike remains low. A second hike in the fall seems less likely to us if the recent trend in inflation continues."

Here is where the major benchmarks ended:

S&P 500 Index was up 32.90 points (0.7%) at 4,472.16;
Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) was 86.01 points (0.3%) at 34,347.43;
Nasdaq Composite was up 158.26 points (1.2%) at 13,918.96.

The 10-year Treasury note yield (TNX) was down about 12 basis points at 3.861%.
Cboe's Volatility Index (VIX) was down 1.31 at 13.53.
Financial companies were among the strongest performers Wednesday, with the KBW Regional Banking Index (KRX) rising more than 2%. Energy shares were also strong as WTI crude oil futures extended a rally near $76 a barrel—a 2½- month high. Optimism about a potential peak in interest rates had the opposite effect on the U.S. dollar index, which weakened for the fifth straight day and hit its lowest point since April 2022.

For climate activists, the fact that major carbon emitters and ESG are somehow ending up as bed-fellows exposes holes that urgently need to be closed.

It’s also part of the reason why jurisdictions including the European Union are currently working on a formal definition of greenwashing, in an effort to protect end investors from bogus ESG claims.

“It’s a huge loophole in how these ESG bond indices are built,” said Lara Cuvelier, a campaigner at environmental non-profit Reclaim Finance.

“It’s a real problem that entities are included in such products that have close links to Saudi Aramco.” — Bloomberg

Good4picorp

The European Commission has tried to assure farmers that the new rules will help them better adapt to climate change.

Natural environment

A restored natural environment will also nurture bees and other pollinators that are so vital to crop yields.

When EU policymakers get down to voting on the Nature Restoration Law in Strasbourg, the law’s proponents can point to the Meuse valley, 100km east of Brussels, and the rare insights it offers on how it’s possible for environmentalists, farmers and heavy industry to work together without losing sight of profits.

When tough new regulations in Belgium in the early 1990s nearly heralded the end of the gravel industry, the privately-owned plant reached novel agreements with local authorities to restore the Meuse to how it would have looked before the industrial revolution.

The policymakers were likely spurred into action after witnessing the massive damage caused by two major floods in 1993 and 1995, according to Schaerlaekens who overseas the project in the area.

The gravel pit’s recipe is simple: it either directly buys farmers’ land along the banks of the river for an above-market rate, or offers them farmers parcels of land further inland.

It then extracts gravel for up to 20 years. Once done, it flattens the river bank and lets it be, allowing nature to reclaim it.

The payoff has been the birdsong, wild flowers along the river bank, roaming Galloway cattle and Konik horses in the former gravel pits.

Not to mention the profit from extracting millions of tonnes of gravel and sand for Steengoed.

Even though annual production has fallen from nine million tonnes in the 1990s to around 1.5 million tonnes, Frank Liebens, the director of the gravel pit, is happy with how things stand.

“I’m convinced that this level of restoration is the only way,” he said.

“Until the 1990s, we weren’t friends with the people trying to restore nature. Now we are friends with even the most hard-line greens.”

Symbiotic factors

But Meuse river’s restoration relied on several symbiotic factors.

A set of local policymakers who were willing to sign off on such contracts.

The luxury of time – 30 years since it was first conceptualised.

An industry - gravel extraction – that was unique in its ability to help in the re-wilding of an area.

Those factors may be hard to replicate across different geographies in the EU or scale up to the level that the new law seeks.

It’s also unclear if other industry sectors can contribute to restoration and simultaneously profit, signalling the tough road ahead for the Green Deal’s latest piece of legislation.

The ferocity of the debate has led the bloc’s climate chief Timmermans to proclaim that climate policy is entering the “culture wars,” amid accusations of threats and manipulation between him and those in the centre-right.

If rejected by the parliament, it would be the first Green Deal legislation to face a serious risk of being scrapped.

It’ll also signal challenges ahead in enacting a biodiversity pillar which the commission says is necessary to meet the bloc’s ambitious climate goals.

If accepted, it would recast the landscape of the continent at a time when heat records are getting shattered globally.

“No nature restoration would make it almost impossible to reach our climate goals,” Timmermans said. — Bloomberg
