picorp pun boleh,., sabar ya!

Chinese e-commerce behemoth Alibaba (NYSE:BABA) is rebounding again after being weighed down by a myriad of headwinds. Over the past three years, BABA stock has taken a hit of more than 60% but is currently trading in the green. Analysts expect a whopping 74% upside from current price levels.

The firm is back, posting impressive numbers again and reshaping its business structure. In its first quarter, it sailed past top and bottom-line estimates.

Its strong growth was led by its international commerce segment, which clocked in an incredible 29% year-over-year growth. Moreover, as its cloud segment saw a minor dip in the quarter, it climbed a remarkable 4% YOY.

The company is preparing to spin off its Cloud division by transforming it into an independent entity through a stock dividend distribution to shareholders.

The segment has proven to be a goldmine for Alibaba, with the sector’s revenue growth from 2018 to 2022 at a staggering 451%. This flourishing titan is far from slowing down.

CHINA's capital market will play a significant role in stimulating the vitality of rising Chinese technology companies, further nurturing the country's technological advancement and driving high-quality economic growth, experts said on Tuesday.

This is in light of the central leadership stressing the vital importance of the financial sector in serving the real economy, they added.

Of the 534 companies listed on the STAR Market, 218 are new-generation information technology companies, 108 are biomedicine companies and 88 are high-end equipment manufacturers, according to public data.

"Companies driven by scientific research results and technology innovation will be the pillar of China's high-quality economic growth," said analysts at Haitong Securities.

Zhao Xijun, co-president of the Chinese Academy of Financial Inclusion at Renmin University of China, said that China has been on the right track of guiding more capital market resources toward technological innovation over the past few years.

The registration-based initial public offering mechanism, which was first piloted on the STAR Market four years ago, has enhanced the capital market's inclusiveness. While companies not reporting profits are allowed to list on the STAR Market as long as they meet certain requirements, high-tech companies' development requirements are better met at different development stages, Zhao said.

To better facilitate China's economic recovery, more effective measures should be taken now, so that the capital market can better serve the real economy, he added.

Liu Feng, chief economist at China Galaxy Securities, said that the Chinese capital market should increase its efficiency in serving the real economy, as China stresses the importance of innovation-driven economic development.

At present, 80 percent of the capital directed to the real economy comes from banks. Although China is already the world's second-largest equities market, stocks and bonds still account for a relatively small part of aggregate financing to the real economy. This is the area that the Chinese capital market can improve to serve the real economy with greater efficiency, said Liu.

Gu Shu, chairman of Agricultural Bank of China, pointed out that traditional financial service providers, such as commercial banks, are more prudent in providing financing. But technology startups usually incur higher risks, making it difficult to attract traditional financing at the early stage, he said.

A multilevel capital management system should be established, said Wang Weidong, executive vice-president of China Development Bank.

Government investment should be mainly responsible for technologically innovative projects related to public welfare. For projects with clear market prospects, financial institutions should invest more by coming up with optimized financing products.

Policy banks can play a bigger role in getting projects that face temporary problems but ready for market operation, he said.

Qiu Yong, chairman of the Shanghai Stock Exchange, said the bourse will continue efforts to support the listing of companies with original technologies so that the companies can facilitate the development of emerging industrial clusters and the upgrading of traditional industries.

Richard Keers, chief financial officer of Schroders, said that China's further financial opening-up can facilitate the cross-border flow of venture capital and promote the country's technological innovation.

The expansion of qualified foreign limited partners, through which foreign investors can convert US dollars into renminbi and invest in RMB-denominated private markets, can provide more funding for early-stage innovation, Keers said.

The scheme can also facilitate the maturity of Chinese domestic venture capital companies, making them more proficient in evaluating Chinese startups, he added. - China Daily/ANN

SINGAPORE: Asian stocks hit two-month highs on Thursday and the dollar notched new peaks against the yen and the yuan as the Federal Reserve paused rate hikes while flagging more, drawing attention to the contrast with more dovish policy outlooks in Asia.

The Fed left its benchmark funds rate window at 5-5.25%, as expected, yet committee members surprised markets by projecting two more 25 basis point (bps) hikes this year, sending short-term U.S. yields higher and closing out bets on any cuts in 2023.

The European Central Bank, meanwhile, is expected to deliver its eighth straight rate hike later in the day which will take borrowing costs to two-decade highs. The euro, which made a one-month high at $1.0865 overnight, traded at $1.0816 as investors awaited the decision.

That cast Asia's biggest economies in stark relief, with China cutting another key policy rate on Thursday amid fresh signs its economy is stumbling and traders betting the Bank of Japan will stick with its ultra-easy monetary policy this week.

The yen fell about 0.9% to a six-month low of 141.43 per dollar. The yuan hit a six-month trough of 7.1819, while hopes of more stimulus sent stock indexes in Hong Kong and Shanghai up by more than 1%.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.6% to a new two-month high, while Japan's tearaway Nikkei extended its rally to new three-decade peaks.

S&P 500 futures were flat. European futures and FTSE futures each fell about 0.2%.

"The Fed is being pretty steadfast," said Bart Wakabayashi, branch manager at State Street in Tokyo, which has brought back the contrast with stimulatory Japan to the fore.

"They point at inflation, the labour market and wages and say look we want (inflation) at 2% and whether it's 6% or 5% or 5.5% it's still not at 2% - they're going to do they need to do to get that down to 2%."

Two-year Treasury yields, which closed two bps higher at the end of the New York session rose another 3.5 bps in Tokyo trade to 4.7416%. Ten-year yields rose 3.1 bps to 3.8291%.

Fed funds futures pricing didn't budge all that much in the wake of the meeting, but expectations for a hike next month firmed a little and traders pushed any hopes for cuts deeper into 2024.

"The conditions we need to see ... to get inflation down are coming into place," Fed Chair Jerome Powell said. "But the process of that actually working on inflation is going to take some time."

CHINA SLOWDOWN

In Asia, the focus was on China where industrial output and retail sales figures fell short of market forecasts and property investment and home sales tumbled at a sharper pace, in the latest sign the country's post-pandemic economic recovery is losing steam.

China cut a key benchmark, its medium-term loan rates, by 10 bps -- two days after trimming short-term rates -- and the yuan hit a six-month low in anticipation that more support is on the way, before steadying somewhat.

"Expectations are building that additional stimulus will come from Beijing and this could be the much needed catalyst for the Chinese market to overcome a disappointing first half," said Tai Hui, Asia-Pacific chief strategist at J.P. Morgan Asset Management.

Elsewhere those hopes and strong Australian jobs data leant support to the Aussie dollar, which was firm at $0.6822, while the New Zealand dollar was on the ropes after data showed the economy shrank into recession this year.

That likely confirms an end to rate hikes and the kiwi was last down 0.2% at $0.6197.

The euro, which has been grinding higher on the dollar for about two weeks on signs of slowing U.S. inflation and hints of cooling in the labour market, faces its next test when the ECB meets later in the day. A 25 bps hike is expected.

The yen slipped as expectations build that the BOJ makes no policy adjustments when its two-day meeting ends on Friday. Japanese government bonds rallied a little.

Oil steadied with benchmark Brent crude futures up 0.5% to $73.55 a barrel.

Gold, which pays no income, was pressured by expectations for U.S. interest rates to linger at high levels, and fell to a two-week low of $1,934 an ounce.

Bitcoin dropped 3% overnight and nursed losses just below $25,000. - Reuters

Pasaran saham cycle, prepare for the coming bull run :)

Closing Market Update: Rally Extends on Rate Hopes

The S&P 500 rose for the sixth straight session to a new 14-month high thanks to investor hopes that the end of the rate-hiking cycle could be near.

U.S. stocks shrugged off a brief bout of bearishness following the Federal Reserve's latest policy meeting to end broadly higher Thursday, with the S&P 500® Index (SPX) climbing for a sixth consecutive session to a fresh 14-month high amid growing investor optimism that interest rates may be near a peak.

The Nasdaq Composite (COMPX) index closed at its highest level since April 2022 as big tech companies continued to lead, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) ended at a six-month high.

The Fed concluded its two-day policy meeting Wednesday by hitting "pause" on a year-long string of rate hikes. While Chair Jerome Powell continues to emphasize the Fed's focus on bringing down inflation, the market's strength indicates investors still hope the end of rate hikes may be near.

Despite the improving mood in the market, however, Senior Investment Strategist Kevin Gordon notes that big companies may be playing too big of a role in pushing the benchmark indexes higher.

"While the broader market remains in an uptrend and many have been quick to declare the start of the new bull market, there are several blemishes," he says. "We haven't yet reached double-digit territory when it comes to the percentage of stocks in the S&P 500 making new 52-week highs . . . banks are still down from the market's October 2022 low, and the percentage of stocks in the Russell 2000 (RUT) trading above their 50-day moving average has failed to breach the important 90% threshold."

"This matters because we are eight months past the market's major low," he adds. "This is either the longest bear market rally in history, or the weakest start to a bull market on record. We can treat it like a bull if and when it starts acting like a bull."

Here is where the major benchmarks ended:

S&P 500 Index was up 53.25 points (1.2%) at 4,425.84;
Dow Jones industrial average was up 428.73 (1.3%) at 34,408.06;
Nasdaq Composite was up 156.34 (1.2%) at 13,782.82.
The 10-year Treasury note yield (TNX) was down about 8 basis points at 3.718%.
Cboe's Volatility Index (VIX) was up 0.61 at 14.49.

Energy was the best performing sector Thursday as WTI crude oil futures rose more than 3%, putting them back above $70 per barrel, thanks to improving demand from China. Health care and retail stocks were also strong. The euro surged above $1.09, its strongest level against the U.S. dollar in over a month, after the European Central Bank earlier Thursday hiked its benchmark deposit rate a quarter point to 3.5%, saying inflation is still too high.

Why do small-cap stocks outperform large cap stocks?
If you have a greater risk tolerance and longer time horizons, small-cap stocks tend to outperform big-caps over time because they are able to grow more rapidly than larger companies.

BETUL SEKALI :)
Is it time to buy small-cap stocks?
Large-company stocks' earnings growth is likely to trail in 2024, with a predicted jump of 12.5%. And a wobbly economy means now is a prime time to buy stakes in small companies, say some experts. History shows that small-cap stocks rally before an economic rebound is clearly under way.

What is true about behavioral finance?
Behavioral Finance
Behavioral finance is the study of the influence of psychology on the behavior of investors or financial analysts. It also includes the subsequent effects on the markets. It focuses on the fact that investors are not always rational, have limits to their self-control, and are influenced by their own biases.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia recorded a net inflow of foreign investment of RM74.6bil in 2022 as compared to RM50.4bil in 2021.

The National Statistics Department said in a statement that as at the end of the 2022, the country's foreign direct investment (FDI) position was RM879.1bil, up from RM782bil in 2021.

Meanwhile, the country's direct investment abroad (DIA) for 2022 was RM58.6bil as compared to RM19.4bil in 2021.

The Statistics Department said Malaysia's FDIs and DIAs were encouraging as it reflected the favourable economic situation in the country that attracted foreign companies to continue their investments and similarly, local companies to expand and diversify their business activities abroad.

By sector, Malaysia's manufacturing contributed to the largest FDI flows, expanding RM17.1bil for a net inflow of RM49.5bil.

This was followed by services, which was the second highest contributor, followed by the mining sector.

The statistics department said the Americas region surpassed Asia as the highest region of FDI for 2022 with net inflows of RM42.6bil, mainly from the US, which amounted to RM37.8bil.

"Meanwhile, Asia region has been the predominant source for FDI position with a value of RM449bil, followed by Europe at RM224.5bil and the Americas at RM187.3bil as at the end of 2022," it added.

On DIA's, the country's position stood at RM607.5bil as at end-2022, compared to RM546.5bil a year before.

The services sector remained the primary sector for DIA, contributing 72.2% of the total investment, especially in financial activities.

Meanwhile, the mining and quarrying and manufacturing sectors contributed 12.5% and 10.2%, respectively.

By region, Asia overtook Europe as the region with the highest DIA flows in 2022 with a value of RM23.5bil.

The Netherlands secured the most DIA flows with RM14.3bil, followed by Indonesia with RM11.9bil and Singapore with RM11.2bil.

The S&P 500 climbed 1.22% to end the session at 4,425.84 points, the Nasdaq increased 1.15% to 13,782.82 points, while the Dow rose 1.26% to 34,408.06 points. — Reuters

BENGALURU: The S&P 500 and Nasdaq surged on Thursday to close at their highest in 14 months, as investors cheered economic data that fuelled bets that the US Federal Reserve is nearing the end of its aggressive interest-rate hike campaign.

Treasury yields slid after a slew of economic data pointed to easing inflation, helping offset worries about future rate hikes and boosting Apple and Microsoft to record highs.

Data showed US retail sales unexpectedly rose in May as consumers spent on a range of goods including vehicles. Another data set showed jobless claims were unchanged at a seasonally adjusted 262,0000 for the week ended June 10, but were above economists' forecast of 249,000 claims.

Additionally, import prices fell in May and the annual decrease was the sharpest in three years. That followed a report on Tuesday showing April headline inflation increased by less than expected.

The Fed left rates unchanged at the 5%-5.25% range on Wednesday and indicated it may hike by at least half a percentage point this year as inflation remains persistent.

"Due to softer inflation data earlier this week and resilient economic data after the Fed meeting, the market is rallying and yields are falling because investors don't believe the Fed is as hawkish as they presented," said Ross Mayfield, an investment strategy analyst at Baird.

"The market doesn't believe they have two more hikes in the chamber."

Traders see a 67% chance of a 25-basis point rate hike in July, followed by a potential rate cut by December, according to the CME Fedwatch tool.

Thursday's gains were broad and included sectors viewed as sensitive to swings in the health of the economy. All 11 S&P 500 sector indexes rose, led by health care, up 1.55%, followed by a 1.54% gain in communication services.

US Treasury yields pulled back, lifting shares of rate-sensitive growth stocks.

Apple rose 1.1%, while Microsoft rallied 3.2%, beating its previous record high close in November 2021.

"There is a great deal of money on the sidelines of people who'd been scared of recession, and as the worries go away people are returning to equities," said David Russell, vice president of Market Intelligence at TradeStation.

So far in 2023, the S&P 500 is up about 15% and the Nasdaq has climbed about 32%, fueled by signs of economic resilience, a better-than-expected earnings season and bets that interest rates are near their peak.

The S&P 500 climbed 1.22% to end the session at 4,425.84 points.

The Nasdaq increased 1.15% to 13,782.82 points, bringing its gain this week to almost 4%.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.26% to 34,408.06 points.

Volume on US exchanges was relatively heavy, with 11.8 billion shares traded, compared to an average of 10.9 billion shares over the previous 20 sessions.

Kroger Co dropped 2.7% after the big-box retailer missed first-quarter revenue estimates.

Kohl's Corp rose 2.7% after TD Cowen upgraded the department store operator to "outperform" from "market perform".

US-listed shares of Chinese companies Alibaba Group and JD.com each gained more than 3% after the People's Bank of China cut the borrowing cost for its medium-term policy loans for the first time in 10 months.

Advancing issues outnumbered falling ones within the S&P 500 by a 7.1-to-one ratio.

The S&P 500 posted 48 new highs and no new lows; the Nasdaq recorded 80 new highs and 72 new lows. — Reuters
