ZAPORIZHZHIA, Ukraine — After a week of giving ground to the Ukrainian army in the opening phase of Kyiv’s counteroffensive, Russian forces struck back Tuesday in an area where Ukraine had earlier announced it had retaken several villages.
The Russians attacked with aviation and artillery barrages, a spokesman for the Ukrainian military said. One village at the center of the fighting, Makarivka, was reduced to ruins through the course of the day.
The Russian attack came after thunderstorms had swept over southern Ukraine, muddying the terrain and complicating operations for both armies. Ukraine is in the early stages of a counteroffensive operation to reclaim territory seized by Russia in the country’s south.

"These are high-precision ammunition, communications equipment, aircraft, drones, and so on," Putin said. "We have them, unfortunately, we lack them quantitatively."
Putin made the remarks during a meeting with war correspondents. The despotic leader told state media that things were missing in Russia’s "special military operation."

Russia's FSB opens criminal case against Wagner chief Prigozhin for armed mutiny - TASS
Russia's FSB security service has opened a criminal case against mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin for calling for armed mutiny, the TASS news agency said on Friday, citing the National Antiterrorism Committee.
Internal fighting. How to fight with NATO+. Evil Putin's days are numbered.
Russian general urges Wagner fighters not to join ‘coup’
The Russian military has ordered Wagner troops to stand down and return to their bases amid reports the mercenary group has launched a coup against the Kremlin.
It comes amid unconfirmed reports of Russian border guards reportedly not stopping a column of Wagner fighters moving through a checkpoint in Novoshakhtinsk, in Russia’s Rostov region.
On Friday night Yevgeny Prigozhin, the Wagner mercenary leader, accused the Russian military of shelling his fighters and said his group would stop the “evil” of Moscow’s military leadership.
Russia’s security service launched a criminal investigation into Prigozhin and accused him of an “armed rebellion”.
Soldiers across Russia were put on high alert after Prigozhin said that he had 25,000 men ready to fight.
“This is a stab in the back of the country and the president,” Gen Vladimir Alekseyev, the deputy head of Russia’s military intelligence agency said in a video appeal urging Mr Prigozhin’s fighters not to join a rebellion. “This is a coup”.
Later reports said that Putin’s motorcade was seen speeding through Moscow to the Kremlin from his residence in the suburbs of the capital.
The deputy commander of Russia’s Ukraine campaign, General Sergey Surovikin, urged Wagner soldiers to stand down.

Armoured vehicles spotted on streets of Rostov after Prigozhin's statement ALONA MAZURENKO — FRIDAY, 23 JUNE 2023, 23:52
Photos of armoured vehicles on the streets of the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don are being posted on Russian social media following the statement made by Yevgeny Prigozhin, leader of the Wagner Group, about a de facto declaration of war against the Russian army. Checkpoints are being set up at entrances to Moscow.
Wagner chief accuses Moscow of lying to public about Ukraine
The Wagner head, Yevgeny Prigozhin, has accused Moscow’s leadership of lying to the public about the justifications for invading Ukraine, in the latest sign of conflict between Vladimir Putin’s government and one of his most important allies.
In an explosive 30-minute video posted on his Telegram channel, Prigozhin dismissed Moscow’s claims that Kyiv was planning to launch an offensive on the Russian-controlled territories in eastern Ukraine in February 2022.
“There was nothing extraordinary happening on the eve of February 24,” Prigozhin said.
“The ministry of defence is trying to deceive the public and the president and spin the story that there was insane levels of aggression from the Ukrainian side and that they were going to attack us together with the whole Nato block,” the Wagner head said.
Wagner chief claims his forces downed Russian military helicopter, says fighters 'ready to die'
MOSCOW: The chief of mercenary group Wagner said early on Saturday (Jun 24) that his forces had shot down a Russian military helicopter.
"A helicopter has just now opened fire at a civilian column. It has been shot down by units of PMC Wagner," Yevgeny Prigozhin said in an audio message. He did not provide any details and AFP could not verify the claim.
Prigozhin earlier said his forces, who have spearheaded much of Russia's offensive, had crossed into Russia with his forces to topple Moscow's military leadership, adding he and his 25,000 fighters were "ready to die".
"All of us are ready to die. All 25,000, and then another 25,000," he said in an audio message, after earlier accusing the Russian top brass of launching strikes against his men.
"We are dying for the Russian people."
In response, Russian authorities said security had been tightened in several regions and the mayor of Moscow announced that "anti-terrorist" measures were being taken in the capital.
Authorities in Rostov urged residents to stay home.
"Law enforcement agencies are doing everything necessary to ensure the safety of residents," Rostov governor Vasily Golubev said.
Videos and pictures posted online, including by TASS, showed armed men surrounding administrative buildings in Rostov and tanks deployed in the city centre. It was not clear who the armed men were.
Prigozhin vowed to "go to the end" to topple the Russian military leadership, whom he accused of launching strikes on his men, while the country's prosecutor general said he was under investigation for "armed rebellion".
"We are going onwards and we will go to the end," Yevgeny Prigozhin said after vowing to sideline Russia's military leadership.
"We will destroy everything that stands in our way," he added in the most audacious challenge to President Vladimir Putin since the start of the offensive in Ukraine last year.
Rusians overthrow evil Putin, he is finished. Someone will take over him and work with western countries. Russia again split into few more countries. So blame EU or US ? No, evil Putin blame himself. Ukraine and NATO+ win the war.
Wagner chief claims to have seized control of key military facilities in 2 Russian cities.
The simmering conflict between Moscow’s military leadership and Yevgeny Prigozhin, the bombastic chief of private mercenary group Wagner, has dramatically escalated into an open insurrection that plunges Russia into renewed uncertainty.
Moscow’s mayor said the capital is reinforcing security as Prigozhin claimed to have seized control of key military facilities in the Russian cities of Rostov and Voronezh Saturday.
Here’s the latest:
Wagner claims control in Rostov: Prigozhin said in a video he is in Rostov-on-Don, in southern Russia close to the Ukraine border, and that his forces have control of military facilities and the airfield there. He pledged to blockade Rostov and move on to Moscow if Russia’s Defense Minister and top general did not meet with him in the city, where Russia’s Southern Military District is headquartered. He said his men are not stopping the officers from carrying out their duties. It comes after Prigozhin said his fighters were entering the Rostov region on Friday and that Russian Guards and military police have joined the Wagner group. CNN cannot independently verify his claims. Videos circulating on social media and geolocated to Rostov city show military vehicles on the streets and helicopters over the city Saturday morning. It is currently unclear whose command the vehicles are under the control of. Claims of control in Voronezh: The Wagner group later said it had taken control of Russian military facilities in the city of Voronezh, in southwestern Russia, saying “the army switches to the side of the people.” Earlier, the governor of Voronezh oblast said that “a convoy of military equipment is moving along the M-4 Don Federal Highway.” The M-4 is a highway connecting Voronezh and Rostov-on-Don. Voronezh is directly north of the Rostov region. Alleged helicopter attack: Prigozhin also claimed a helicopter fired at a civilian column and was downed by his forces, but did not give any further details. He accused the Russian military’s chief of staff of ordering an aerial attack “in the middle of civilian cars.” Later, he said that his units were hit by a helicopter on a highway. CNN cannot independently verify these claims. Prigozhin accuses Russia of killing his forces: The Wagner chief accused Russia’s military leadership of killing a “huge amount” of his mercenary forces in a strike on a camp and vowed to retaliate. “Many dozens, tens of thousands of lives, of Russian soldiers will be punished,” Prigozhin said. “I ask that nobody put up any resistance.” In a later Telegram post, Prigozhin said that his criticism of the military leadership was a “march of justice” and not a coup. Russia’s Ministry of Defense denied Prigozhin’s claims, calling it an “informational provocation.” Russia accuses Prigozhin of “armed rebellion”: The Federal Security Service (FSB), Russia’s domestic intelligence service, responded by urging Wagner fighters to detain their leader and on Friday it opened a criminal case against the Prigozhin, accusing the mercenary force’s chief of calling for “armed rebellion,” the state news agency TASS reported. Russia’s Ministry of Defense appealed to Wagner forces to “safely return to their points of permanent deployment,” saying they were “tricked into Prigozhin’s criminal adventure.” Russia steps up security: Moscow’s mayor said “anti-terrorist measures” are being carried out in the city. A local journalist said the streets appear calm in Moscow, but that there is heightened security at government agencies. In the Russian city of Rostov, military vehicles could be seen driving the streets. Posts were organized on Saturday in the area of the headquarters of the Southern Military District in Rostov where military personnel and law enforcement officers are keeping order, a TASS correspondent reported.
